Smith definitely doesn't look like the stereotypical picture of an athlete. Among the top cricketers in the world he's definitely one of the less typically athletic looking ones, compare him to the likes of Stokes, but stats show it doesn't affect him. Really gives weight to the "cricket is a game for everyone" argument.

He might not have big muscles etc but I remember watching him field in an ODI at old trafford when he first broke into the australia side, and he was absolutely electric - speed agility and obviously ridiculous hand eye coordination are also athletic skills which are of high value in many sports (cricket being one).

That's true, but he doesn't look naturally graceful off the field. Same with quite a few top athletes I think, totally different once they get onto the field and they're moving in a way that's specific to their sport.

I would not judge Smith's fitness level by his body fat %age or lack of muscle contours. You can be fit and strong and not have a chiseled six-pack. This is just silly.

He really doesn't look like an athlete does he? Really gawky

It is one of the great things about the game that even in the modern era of is a game where all body types can compete at the highest level.

what exactly determines an athlete? Some of the greatest fielders to play cricket have been skin and bones eg Rhodes - RSA and Harper - Win.

Smith seems to have a fat face nothing about his body suggests he’s a fatty. And he’s one of the best fielders I’ve ever seen.

The original comment wasn't that he was fat or lacked muscle but that he's "gawky". When he's not on the cricket pitch he does look a bit uncoordinated, but obviously once he's on the field you see why that's not an indicator of sporting performance. Could say the same of a lot of top sprinters for example, when they're just walking around they don't move like elite tier athletes.

having bodyfat regardless of hardwork any athlete at that level do is purely genetic.

Smith's 2nd post, this time talks about the '2nd authentic swing'. This one about being 'powerful and clearing the rope'.

I was hanging around with Sutherland last year at the National t20 finals because a mate of mine plays for them. Instead of getting the tram back to the team hotel, Smithy ran the 5km back. Even just sitting around watching the side (he had his elbow injury at the time) you could see he was a ball of energy and incredibly fit. Sometimes the people who aren't the most naturally athletic can make themselves by sheer hard work.

Think a few posters could help themselves out in this thread by looking up the word gawky... Also the idea that Smith isn't a natural athlete is plain daft, isn't it? To get picked as a specialist fielder for Australia you've got to be a pretty bloody good athlete, let's face it.

Thought the first video was good if not exactly ground breaking, wasn't a fan of this one from an amateur point of view - closing yourself off isn't going to help many people.

He's a guy who has ridiculously good reactions and is rapid. He clearly has plenty of fast twitch muscle fibres and natural athletic ability.

He won't have significantly better reactions than average (noone does), just a much better response!
