General discussion about helmets...
« on: March 17, 2009, 02:25:32 PM »

Personally I find it surprising to see some pros have such small gaps between their grill and the peak of the helmet... The helmet I use at the moment is an old albion lid with a gray nicholls Ti grill, and I have it set so the gap is as big as possible, but even then I wish the gap was bigger and also I wish the grill hugged closer to my face. Some grills stick out a mile and dominate your peripheral vision. I'm not really that worried about a ball hitting me between the eyes, regardless of the gap, and I would always side toward better vision at the cost of protection. I'm more bothered about the ball smacking me in the side of the head or in the chin, that is far more probable. Does anyone know what helmets/grills provide the largest possible gap. Masuris seem to have a good gap from pictures I have seen. In contrast, I find it hard to watch Andrew Strauss because of his helmet and the way his grill is configured. His gap is very small and it looks like he is looking through the grill almost!! James Anderson has probably the smallest gap I have ever seen, but he isn't really a top batsman and when facing 80mph+ its probably wise to side a little more with protection if you are not confident

Hashim amlas used to be ridiculous when he first came onto the scene. I've tried to have the gap as small as possible on a ps helmet and it was absolutely ridiculous- you were basically seeing through the actual grill. From experience, masuri's are the best vision wise.

I think it's personal preferance. I like having the grill so i can see but it's still quite a small gap that I have.

simon katich has always had the biggest gap between his face and grill! his helmet looks absolutely huge. my personal preference is to have it as close as possible, and my masuri is perfect for that.

I like to have a big gap as i dont tend to get hit when the short ball comes up it normally flies over the boundary ;) haha but i have the grill on the middle hole on the side of my masuri.

I don't see why you would choose to have a small gap??
