I played for Cumbria Under 16s in what was then the Texaco County Championship North (a long time ago as I'm now 44!) and I was one of only two players in the team not from St Bees School, which is a private school in West Cumbria.  I felt like an intruder at a private party as the coaches spent all their time with the established members of the team and barely gave me the time of day.  I didn't play too badly but was never asked back.  In all honesty, I wasn't quite good enough to stand out at that level and Cumbria were well and truly hammered by Lancs, Yorks, Northumberland and South of Scotland but I hope that the selection net for County juniors is cast a bit wider these days as some of the private school guys were no better than other guys I played against week in week out, but who never got a chance at County level.

Having played county u16 hockey for Staffordshire it can come down to what club you play for as only 5/6 out of the squad were not from Cannock it seemed to all us if you were from Cannock you got in if not you had to work harder so not to dissimilar to the cricket round there

But I can't be bitter as before my knee went I was on warickshires radar as had trials for u19 and was asked back but after knee went could not bowl so fell off cricket really for couple of years so I had my shot :( :( :(

Are you still playing hockey? Sounds like you are/were pretty good!

I'll be at Cannock in a couple of weeks for the EH Trophy Final, hoping to see Guernsey win it again :) Too old/fat/not good enough to get anywhere near the team now so will spectate with a beer.

Semi retired after 17 years of sport 48 weeks of year

Still play a little but well below level I did as to play decent level would mean an hours drive every week plus loads of training so just help out a local side when I can

I miss the Cannock festivals as they were fun but I always ended up playing for Loughborough or Cannock bar staff for some reason rather than my team haha

The first cricket box was used in 1874.  The first cricket helmet was introduced in 1974. So, it took 100 years for men to twig that their brains were also worth protecting.

Take 50 wickets, and/or score a 1000 runs in what ever your closest ECB prem league is..they'll pick you then.

I am hoping to be playing in the Vets Cup Final against Reading - trying to negotiate with the wife that I can disappear from the planned long weekend!!  :(
