Grounds . . . Where would you go?

My sons and I may be in England in early June and we want to catch a high skill level cricket match, or spend at least a day watching one. I don't mean an international, but top notch county or close to it. I don't want to go to Lord's because that has become a lot like a gigantic, sterile American football stadium, with corporate boxes and glassed in booths etc.. So, old world charm, not too much commerce, and we'll want to feel like it is 1932 or 1911. I am considering an Essex game, but Chelmsford looks less impersonal than Lord's but maybe not the most beautiful. (Note: we sort of like Essex, Sussex, Kent). Hove is no better but I was considering the Arundel Castle Cricket grounds (Sussex if we have good luck, or the Duke of Norfolk XI). And Canterbury seems very pretty for a Kent match. Somerset's grounds at Taunton look really nice, but I think the train ride from London may be double that of Kent, or Arundel, or Chelmsford. Where would you go for this kind of experience? Am I missing some glaringly obvious choice? Is a team like the Duke of Norfolk XI worth watching? (We will be in Cambridge one day but we will have a full plate, and I've been to Fenner's enough).

i understand you probably might not be able to make it there, but if you get the chance to go to Trent Bridge take it!

it is far from the soulless place you think it has a special atmosphere even when it is empty.

and do watch the duke of Norfolk game it will be a good day.

Thanks. I've been to Lord's (first time 1981) and I maybe was a tad harsh---I'm just looking for something a tad more genteel than St John's Wood. My apologies for the hyperbole.

Taunton is a very nice place to visit full stop and you could easily spend a couple days down here. However, the train journey will be long, arduous and bloody expensive. I would also imagine (don't know) that grounds like Canterbury have a bit more soul to them. Taunton is a little bit, I don't know..... boring, although the cricket is very good.

Lords would be great, but what about the Oval? Decent location, decent cricket and nice ground. Taunton would be about 2 and a half hours on the train, but a twenty20 would definately be worth going! The ground is also only 2 minutes walk away from the train station

Depends on when you will be here though. If there's no cricket on, there's not a lot to see at The Oval, nice ground that it is!
