to be honest the willow was grade 3 ish anyway due to the knot and a few blemishes. but you can't argue with the  grains and performance. which matters more in my opinion. always nice to get both though.

thanks mike, Johnny et c. really enjoyed making this one!

Grains look great... Not keen on the knot though and where it is...

Nice shape though... You have done a great job

What are the marks on the face that look to go right through to the back?

them little black marks?

not sure what they are but a few of my bats have had them on i think my lam did

possibly

"Speck" is another which is due entirely to the growing conditions of the tree.  The tree has grown in earth containing a lot of gravel and / or stones.  The tree has taken tiny molecules up into itself with water and this gets deposited along in between the grains.  It is purely cosmetic and is also the sign of a strong bat that will last.

I think your right in saying its a speck simmy, think it adds to the charachter of the bat. Like I say it's not a grade one or two so u'd expect that kind of thing to be found in the willow.

I thought the black lines/specs are to do with iron content in the soil when grown.

The marks are stain, not growing stain, from being oversized cleft and not fully coming out with the moisture, just some sap causing it.
