Having bought a pair of test WK pads off Johnny over a fortnight ago, this weekend I finally got a couple of uninterrupted matches so wanted to do a review of the pads.
(I couldn't upload photos but to see photos go to the Shamrock Cricket section and to "Wicket Keeping Gear" for John's photos)
Firstly, the looks, the pads are a very traditional style which are great for me as I'm not a fan of the newer styles. The silver piping around the top hats is a lovely classy touch and the logos on the top hat and at the ankle are very subtle. The lining is a nice bright green but is balanced by the white padding and silver top hat lining so isn't overbearing.
The build quality of the pads is fantastic, really sturdy and at no point over the 100 overs of the weekend did I feel worried at all when I was diving around in them. The straps are nice and chunky and finished well with the silver tabs. When I first put them on I noticed that the top hats were very angled back in to the legs, so when standing straight upright I could feel them touching my lower thighs, but obviously when in my keeping stance this had no effect, and I didn't notice it after that so I'd just put it down to the change in style from my old pads.
The protection levels are fantastic, when I first got them I worried they might have TOO MUCH padding in them as they looked very chunky, but after wearing them the last couple of days they are so flexible that they bend around your legs with no problems whatsoever. Combined with the fact they are so lightweight it means that you really won't notice the extra protection, but will be thankful for it when you catch one on the ankle (like I did today!) The pads are fantastic for comfort as well and are barely noticeable when on.
Overall, I can't recommend these pads enough, the comfort and protection levels are absolutely outstanding, far greater than you could get with alternatives in the same price bracket (£40 posted). Looking forward to a good season in them!
