Am I just misinterpreting the brand?
« on: August 09, 2012, 10:15:08 PM »

As a number of you will have read I am after a SH bat (my first) with a very light pickup, and the most popular option seemed to be H4L. However, having read  numerous reviews, it seems that the company specialises more in large powerful bats, rather than light, swishable "wands", which is really what I am after (most reviews seem to focus on the power and edge size rather than pickup, which brings me onto another point...) Would a more traditional profile with most of the wood behind the spine rather than edges be possible (I'd like to think I avoid the edges of the bat as much as possible) or would this be straying too far from what H4L do meaning that a better option would be chase it SAF for both pickup and profile?

Once again thank you do much for your time in helping an absolute novice take his first tentative steps into the world of cricket equipment!

Mate being a custom company I'm sure they would be more than happy to make anything to your individual specifications...

Adding to that I'm sure any of the custom companies on here would be more than happy to help out....very helpful place this forum!

Dont feel bad about asking fella. There will be at least 5 makers that could produce what you are asking for right here on the forum.

At least 5? Did you miss the 1 out before that? ;) If you want a custom H4L with smaller edges bigger spine, that is exactly what you will get.

I ordered a h4l a while back. wanted a very light pick up at 2lb 8oz. Bat turned out to not have my desired pick up. Luckily matt took it back. if your heart is set on a h4l, go down and pick a few up. never heard of a bad h4l

Thanks a lot guys. I'll be down in kent with my family this winter and will pick up a bat then - should be great fun. I'll (try to) do a review once I've got it. I know where to come if I have any more questions :)

It's nice to read a post along these lines where the poster asks intelligent questions! It makes a really nice change from the usual "What bat shall I buy" threads... ;)

As the guys above have rightly said practically every company can make you exactly the bat you want. Seeing as how you're wanting to go along and actually talk to a batmaker about your needs then the three companies you have settled on H4l, Chase and SAF are probably the closest to you. Again, all of them can make you your perfect bat.

As far as profiles go, I would keep an open mind and discuss it with whomever you decide to go with. I have a Chase that Dan made for me in this sort of shape and I have seen a H4l that Matt made along the same lines that looked stunning. I haven't seen a SAF in that shape but I have absolutely no doubt Norbs could make you whatever you wanted....but all of the guys may think you would be better off with a different profile...listen to what they say, they know better than anyone on here.

It is a difficult choice but there is no 'wrong' answer. You won't get a bad bat from any of them.....

Don't complicate things though as you'll just end up going around in circles... ;)

I'll tell you what, I just got my Helios today, and my goodness, does it ping. A Scotland international at my club was very interested in swapping for it. :D Helios currently have a 2.9 Atlas for sale. The edges aren't massive or small, just the right size at 31mm, and the spine is big, and has a light pick up according to James. You should get in touch with him! Here's the link...

for what it is worth, as this will be your first full sized bat, my view is having a special one made for you would be a great thing to do.

take your old bat with you, but expect the new one to be a little heavier.

while you are at the workshop pick up some other bats to see what handle shape you like. finally have a good idea of you favourite shots and where on the bat you hit the ball, you can gauge this by seeing the most used part of your old bat.
give this information to Matt, or whichever maker you choose and away you go!
enjoy yourself :)

Hi

I can safely say that the H4L Hattori Matt made for me recently is absolutely perfect in terms of pick up.  It's 2lb 9oz and beautifully balanced, feels like an extension of my arm when I use it.  It's got great 'swishability' and the Hattori is not a profile with huge edges on a 2lb 9oz, so this profile (or something similar) in a lighter weight would probably suit you very well.  I'm a touch player, not a big hitter and I love my Hattori.

Hope this helps

Sam
I have had a few H4L in a 2.8 and 2.9, all have a great pick up and go really well.
but go for the 666, as it has the lightest pick-up of all the H4L. Great bats.

I have just got a Chase finback, which I asked for a slightly higher middle and that's very nice.

Another option would be CF premier Cru in an Aria shape (with an extended spine).  I have one of these and my club mates love it.  It has a great middle with a fantastic pick-up, plus if you ask the right people on here you could get a grade 1 bat for £150ish.
