Hey guys ,

Just wondering , after shaping the bat , do you still need to wax it if your putting on an anti scuff sheet (and if so , do you do it before or after putting it on)?

I'm no batmaker (although I would like to be!) but I'm guessing you don't have to wax the bat, but it is something basically every batmaker does as it makes the finish much better and helps the moisture levels (I think).

I'm guessing you're having a try at bat making or are you just wondering?

You can wax it before you put anti-scuff on. Just leave it 24 hours or so, as the anti scuff may not stick properly

Ah , ok , thanks for the help guys. How much wax should be applied to a bat from a small 15ml tin?

I wouldn't know. I personally have a large tin of beeswax which does the same job. Polishes up quite nicely too. I just put 2 coats on and buffed each time.

Does wax have the same affect as oiling? I've seen some things around saying waxing gives the bat a yellowish/dark tint.

I've found the wax makes the grains stand out more. I think it's just the bat wax that makes it yellow a bit, as it's essentially solid linseed oil.

wouldnt use that, I've used it before and it doesnt behave well in general. the best stuff ive seen is the bat fudge from Dean, creates a lovely finish and brings out the grains without staining the bat much.

I used some finishing wax from B&Q.  Seemed to do the job quite well.

Sam: Briwax works for me but you must use it very sparingly or you end up with a mirror finish on the blade! Recently I've managed to finish a couple of bats just with the polish that's left on the lathe mounted mop I use.
