Club level Mankad - How far can I back up?
« on: August 31, 2012, 08:22:05 AM »

In light of recent Khartik related events, does anyone know the specifics of the law regarding run outs and batsmen backing up at club level rather than first class? I seem to recall there was a change to the first class/international law but unsure as to the current stance at club cricket.
This is as a batsman trying to work out what I can get away with rather than actually attempting a mankad myself, that would cause far too much of an argument to be worthwhile!
Thanks all and apologies if I have missed a topic where this has already been cleared up.  :)

I thought it was as soon as the bowlers back foot landed in his delivery stride then you could sprint like hell if you wanted.

We had one of these in a sunday friendly a while back. Nearly turned into to fight, with the batsman nearly hitting the bowler with his bat!

We have had a couple of occasions when the batsman is already out of his crease and walking down the wicket before the bowler is passing the stumps, half way through his delivery!!!
But our bowler has simply pulled out and stood there looking at the batsman! The umpire normally has a word with the batsman and politely asks him to delay him backing up until the bowler is level with him, and this usually does the trick without anyone getting stumped or run out!!

I have seen non-striking batsman half way down the pitch before the bowler has even passed the stumps many times and it really really really annoys me that umpires dont do anything about it....

We had a guy do this to us in the T-20 finals last year, I complained to the umpire (Stealing a Run) and asked for a penalty applied to the batting team which was declined so I warned the batsman...he did it again next ball we sent him back "Mankaded"....

People cry abt Mankading but what stealing a run? if you are outside of your crease before the bowler is in his bowling stride its considered stealing, so where is the sportsmanship there?

Thanks, that was what I thought/hoped.

I'm not quite that bad, but at last years fixture against this saturdays opposition one of their bowlers and captain were very annoyed when after every ball I was pretty much level with the bowler after his follow through  :D Thought it would be wise to check the rules in case they try and mankad me tomorrow haha

Games that I have been in when this has happened, the skipper has asked the umpire to have a word, and if this fails (umpire declines to comment) has had a word himself (warning batsman of being run out). It has been effective.

Interesting reading this and the other thread. When I back up I'm probably a yard out of the crease when the bowler reaches his delivery stride. That's after the recent change of rules because before that I would've been further down.

I couldn't just stand there and wait for the bowlers to bowl, it's something to think about though.

For me, I make sure that my bat slides out of the crease as the bowlers back foot lands in his delivery stride, this means that I am a bat plus arm's length down the wicket but still "in".

I work on the same. Walk out but drag the bat just so it's in time with the bowlers back foot. Never had any issues

Don't know whether or not it actually is the umpire's job to have a word without prompting from fielding side, but I'd always say it's the fielding captain/bowler's job to have a word either directly or through the umpire if they have got a problem with the batsmen going too early. As for myself I'm the same as mentioned above, start walking and have my bat slide out just after the bowler's back foot lands, so at that point I'm a bat plus arm's length out of the crease, then carry on walking so by the time my partner plays a shot I'm probably 3 yards out the crease. Definitely find this best for me, as I have the acceleration of a glacier
