Bat weights
« on: March 21, 2013, 02:38:15 AM »

After reading about the bat weight differeing at bat makers scale vs customer's I thought why not weigh all my bats and see what they come in at, as well as how they feel in my hand as I already have an opinion since I haven't weighed any till today. Only 2 bats have had some changes which have changed the weight slightly but should not be significant..I hope i didn't make any mistakes!!!  :-[

Feel is how these felt in my hand before I weighed them today, I wonder if that will change now!! good to know though...anyone else wanna try this?

all four bats I have weigh 2lbs10.6 with my grip set up.
there is a slight difference in pick up between them, with one bat having a lower middle. regardless the difference is negligible in a game situation.

I do not weigh my bats and never have to be honest. If they feel right when I get them then thats all that matters to me. I am lucky though in that I have always been to get one from a shop or bought from friends and never had to mail order. I guess if you buy bats online you have to know what weight and type of shape you like.

This is a very interesting post. Can people share their experiences with lighter bats i.e. those that pickup, feel or weigh lighter than one is used to.

Do these reduce performance in any way? What are the drawbacks of using a much lighter bat? Surprisingly enough, I've never used a bat and felt that it was too light.

The four bats that I currently use are all between 2lb 9 and 2lb 10.5. They are a mixture of LB, LH and LHLB, so all pick up slightly differently. I don't think any of them pick up heavy though.

I've always gone for pick-up over dead weight.

However, for many years that left me with a bat weighing around 2lb 8.

This year, and after joining the forum, I have radically changed.
It's now 3lb 1 and 2lb 13oz.
Both pick up very differently but it's all about pick-up over dead weight.

fasteddie,

That's quite  a switch - did it improve your game in any way? Did you notice a change in your playing style for ex. you now play more straight than earlier and glance/guide short balls more than pull/cut?

I like to pull and hook but I'm wondering if a heavy bat will restrict me from doing so even though it feels good when I drive.

I look at ball park dead weights as a guide, have gone up to 2"12 in the past but find about 2"7-2"10 about the weight for me. Otherwise I don't time the cut and pull shots. Have seen people in the past with bats which are too heavy for them (trying to be macho) but they can miss out on so many runs not being able to time a cut or a pull as the bats are too heavy or even run out of steam as they struggle to lift them after just 10 overs of batting!

I don't have precise figures of my bat weights but if I narrow top three bats which were to be used the most then weight varies from 2.9 to 2.13. Not all have same grip setup and other external items.

For me the pick up is the main thing. i have a target weight that i know suits my style of batting but theres no point going for the target weight and it picking up poorly. as long as im in that rough area and the pick up feels good then im happy. 2lb9-10 with one grip is good. i add a 1 and a 1/2 grips to a standard bat anyway so it probably ends up nearer 2 12 to 2lb13 anyway

i think sometimes people have issues with bats that arent to spec because it isnt clarified at the time what the weight will include. as discussed befor, some advertise fully dressed or finished weight and others shaped and handle bound. with a grip weighing around 2 oz plus stickers and antiscuffs you can soon gain a couple of ounces too much.

Just to add I have not wieghed any of my bats (that i use) in a few years, I rate the feel in hand (pick-up, how i feels when i swing the bat) and it is weird to notice there a 2'8 & 2'12 that feel equally good, some of it also has to do with the handle i guess. I always ask for 2'11 and 99% of the time it feels right, to be honest I am not fan of light pick up bats (just doesn't feel right) as I like bats that feel just a LITTLE heavy but not too much...

What I was trying to achieve was demonstrate how a vast range of weights work as long as pick-up suits the batsman, also another thing to note is I would have never purchased some of these bats if the correct weight was listed (would have missed some real crackers) but then it also makes me think how the correct weight would have felt like (I am also aware of the fact that some bats loose/gain weight where as others don't but all these have been stored in the same spot and in covers, all have been oiled well too)

I see you mentioned the Torque has a 'heavy' pick up - do you think it makes a difference if a bat is concaved and has a pronounced spine compared to a bat with no concaving such as the Torque?

Most my bats aren't concaved at all or have minimal concaving, most are also low-mid middle so Torque is no different, if anything it has a higher middle than the rest of the bat...i think torque handle is thinner for size of the bat it is....dunno if that makes sense..
