A handmade bat, a year on
« on: October 21, 2013, 09:00:33 PM »

Last year I bought an H4L partmade from Peplow, once of this parish, on a whim with the intention of seeing if my father in law was good to his word after he promised to have a go at making a bat. It's ugly beyond compare with 4 grains, but they're well defined. He came good to his word and I ended up with a bit of a lump at 2lb 12.5oz dressed with a scuff and crappy Gray Nicolls scale grip.

As this was mainly the season of the Laver, I have only used this bat in pub cricket. Now, after a bit of a ropey start and a few edge dinks, this bat started to open up. Driving straight you can hit almost effortless sixes with this thing. One guy got 30 ret of 7 balls with it (well, if you will bowl steak and kidneys...). So this little review is an homage to the old boy who came up with the goods. So much so that she earned a sand and a control grip for a promising first full season of *hits and giggles.

Well done Mr Father InLaw, it might look like Frankenstein but it sounds like it's a monster.
Actually like low grain counts, I think they tend to ping better.

I think if I am not mistaken you had posted this bat on here when it was first made. Remember looking at it and thinking how good it looked shape and finish wise for someone who had never made a bat. Glad its going well and hope it gets even better next season, i think you might owe your adopted father a drink or two ;)

He's been well watered, I can assure you!
I was shadow batting with it last night (as you do) and it just redawned on me how nice a profile it's got.

A good gamble in the end.
