Clubs near Chichester
« on: December 22, 2021, 09:34:05 PM »

Dear all if anyone knows of any friendly clubs near Chichester please pop me a message, moving there early next year.

Low level for now I’ve had a bad injury and still getting back to fitness.
Looked at Chichester Priory but that’s way too posh for me  :)

Don’t care about the standard I’m starting at the bottom and working my way up!
Cheers

Done similar with my first year in a Sussex League last year.

In that neck of the woods, Pagham seem to be thriving with 4 teams well spread through the divisions. The club I enjoyed playing against though were West Wittering, quality square with a laser levelled outfield and friendly people.

My club is around 15 miles east of Chichester if not too far away. Chi Priory are a little posh and not regarded as the most welcoming club around - so I have been told. Would echo West Wittering but a pain to get to in Summer. Other option could be Arundel - 3 sat teams.

I'd probably avoid Pagham as well to be honest, played them a few times and they're not a very friendly bunch to play against on or off the field! If you don't mind the travel and it does depend on where you are actually based near Chi. Are you in Chichester or are you more outskirts if you don't mind me asking, likewise are you looking at Saturday league stuff, Sundays or both?

That area i would agree and say West Wittering as i know one of the players there well, he lives in Worthing like i do but that is his home club so he still plays there despite the journey for a home game! They are a good bunch and have done well over the years to progress to where they are as a club. Their 1's got promoted last season so are now Sussex Div 4 West, which is a decent level now. Sadly Sussex cricket in general is in the pits in terms of quality i'm afraid just like the county side.

Other options would be Stirlands, Selsey in that area or heading more Bognor way there is Bognor, but they just got promoted to the Prem this year, Eastergate or Middleton. Middleton are quite elite as a club in general so if your wallet balance matters give them a miss too! Failing that you also have Arundel as mentioned which isn't too far away or you could even go more Worthing based and look at Goring or East Preston as options.

Thanks for the reply @Thechin21 it’s good to hear from people who live down that way , we will be in Chichester itself, and I’m looking to get back into cricket at a low level and go from there.
Stirlands I’m going to check out to see if there have any friendly cricket I can see they run two league sides, plus another couple I’ve been recommended to from the replies on here.

Stirlands have a nice ground and great pavilion - are suffering a bit as a team in decline with recent relegations for their teams. Have previously been regarded as a bit stuffy but thats just some people's perception and may not been the case. I am not sure of they play Sunday cricket, a number of local clubs don't anymore.  Other club to through in mix is Eastergate who are a really nice bunch and 10 to 15 mins from Chi.
I am involved with East Preston so you would be very welcome but its 30 to 40 minutes from Chi.....my youngest plays junior cricket for Arundel and they are a nice bunch and a club that's struggled a bit in recent years but I feel will progress well in future years as have a good junior set up

Out of interest, did you find a club @ppccopener

I’m interviewing for a job in Chichester in a couple of weeks so was just curious

I have spoke to a couple yes from suggestions on here. There is a Facebook group also just called play cricket in Sussex which is useful.

Stirlands are rebuilding players wise so I’ve contacted them, but there are are quite a few clubs looking for players.

Our house move took a bit longer and there is work to do on it but I want to at least start playing a few games again from about May onwards.

Stirlands and West Wittering both looked very good from the little bit of research I’ve done so far as well.

Very difficult to judge what kind of standard the cricket would be though, considering there’s about 47 divisions in the league!

Yes it’s a big league. I’ve played a half decent standard in London when I was younger but have not played for 4 years after some surgery.

I just want to get back into playing for now, standard wise I’ve no idea what to expect.

Stirlands I have spoken to, they are looking to rebuild. There’s lots of choice thou should you relocate

A few years ago Stirlands were in the Sussex county premier and a strong club - not sure where the players went but they are struggling currently and yes, look to be rebuilding with young teams. Nice ground but like West Wittering its an absolute pain in the neck to get there on Saturday's in the summer with the one road in and full of holidaymakers.

Plenty of nice clubs around this area and I think all of us looking for new players!  Always welcome at East Preston

Just a little update on this thread, house renovations took longer than I thought however I’m doing some training with West Wittering starting in a couple of weeks, hopefully can get fit enough to play for the first time since 2018.

The club appears from my brief contact with them very welcoming so could be a good match.

They have recently started a 3rds so maybe need a player or two

Thanks to all that replied much appreciated

I’ll see how it goes
