Hey guys , was wondering what everyone on here used workbench and vice wise as I've been using some fold up thing for a while , but its a pain to use , dents the edges of the bat , and makes it hard to get the drawknife at the right angle  ! Thanks for any advice  .

I use a folding workmate and a couple of bits of scrap wood to avoid denting the edges.
I only use sandpaper and occasionally a chisel or a file though, so I'm probably not the best one to give advice

A decent sized bench either heavy or fixed to a wall is best.

Vice wise an engineers vice is good however you will need some soft jaws or some wood to replace the metal jaws on them as they will rip the bat edges to bits

I made my own with some 3x2 and an old worktop! Vice wise my old man had one knocking around and I just made some hardwood jaws to replace the metal ones. Job done! My bench is fitted to the structure of my shed so it doesn't move!

I managed to get a woodworking bench from a school that was being demolished, it weighs a lot so doesn't move at all and has some useful storage underneath, the only drawback is that the vices are at the same level as the top of the bench so I will need to install an engineers vice or modify one of the woodworking vices.

Might be worth getting in touch with a few schools or the education section of your local council to see if there is anything going cheap.....
