Mr go to man
« on: June 27, 2013, 06:36:13 PM »

I appear to have become the font of all knowledge when it comes to batting. Not idea why as you guys know I'm only in my 3rd year of cricket and learning myself still!!

Anyway, over the winter this lad has shown vast improvement after spending time with me in the nets over winter

Trainee 1
http://cheltenhamcivilcc.play-cricket.com/profile/statistics.asp?id=11817710&ruleTypeID=6101

I've now been asked by our number 11 (young 17 yr old spinner and not the same club as trainee 1) if I would help him with his batting. He's naturally a clean striker of the ball but has very little technique. I've spent about 15 hours on him in the last few weeks just working with him on some very basic things (shockingly he's played for gloucestershire young cricketers and didn't know to go back and across to a short ball!!!! WTF do these 'county' coaches teach!!).. anyway, he scored his first ever 50 yesterday and is buzzing... My question for advice is where would you start with a player. I've just started with hitting balls,  going through the different shots and just basically trying to get him picking the right shot to the right ball and playing each ball accordingly. He's learning quite fast (back and across to short balls for instance) but I'm wondering where to go next. Do I just keep working on each shot in turn (obviously starting with his weaker shots but ticking over his strengths). I'm not one for trying to change people's natural style but I'd like to just make them  to able to survive until their eyes in and then natural ability will take over.

What do you guys think I should start with?

i always try to teach a solid defence first. then after that maybe which shots they are good at figure out what balls to play it too and find a method from there. always work on there weak links though !

Teach him to drive first, the front and back foot defences usually follow pretty quickly once they can do that, and cutting and pulling is not as essential.

More than anything make sure he is lined up properly for all his shots and that he plays under his eyes because that way at least he'll be most likely to hit it.

With the greatest of respect I would get him booked up with a qualified coach for a few sessions, see what he comes back like then help him work on those things he was taught.
