Things to consider when buying a new bat
« on: July 01, 2013, 09:00:32 PM »

Looking around for a new run stick and just want to check I've got all my bases covered.
Weight - light enough to play your cross bat shots
Middle - position depending on your shots and wickets
Handle- I whip across the ball too much. I think an oval handle might encourage me to play straighter.

Basically I clip off my legs a bit (sometimes getting me into trouble). Back foot punch. Drive down the ground. Cut and pull when in.

Any suggestions

I don't think an oval handle will stop you whipping off leg, that's more technique.

What weight do you normally use and may be a good idea to let people know what kind of tracks you play on, however middle (or swell) position is also technique related.

looks good, feels nice in the hands and picks up well = runs.

try it in the shop with your gloves on too as the pick up is different.

go slightly lighter than you think in the shop too as bats always get heavier on the way home!!

Fill in laver and woods questionnaire online and they reply with what weight/style/profile bat they think you should have.

Was spot on to what i get on with.

I like light 2 8.

Id like to find a handle that encourages me to use my top hand more

What grip set up do you use?  I've found using 1 & 1/2 grips helps to encourage use of the top hand. Works even better with a Gm shock absorba type grip on top

I suspect a trip to the technique clinic will help that more.

:D not sure that actually = runs, but agree with the other two.

Fairly sure pros don't go on looks - just so happens that the clefts which feel good also look pretty decent. But I've seen/ picked up many exceptions to that rule.

The most important thing is that the stickers are cool. I thought everyone knew that? ???

I think pick up, feel and confidence in the bat is the most important. If you like bats with big edges, then go for a bat with big edges, no point in getting a twig you're not confident in. As long as it picks up nicely and feels nice in the hands, that's probably the main thing, but if you're buying online, you don't get the luxury of testing that out. :-[
