travisher
« on: August 30, 2013, 02:42:26 PM »

does anyone have an old travisher for sale? tried ebay etc and they all seem a little expensive 60£+. if anyone has a second hand one or one they no longer need i will purchase from you.

i am right in thinking the travisher is the tool that enables you to put curves into the cleft?

thanks chaps

I've got a blade I paid £30 for off eBay and I made a handle for it you can have for £12 posted cos I find a round bottom plane a lot easier

Tuffers - I wouldnt push you away from getting hold of a travisher, they are useful and if you get a good one they can be a joy to use. Second hand ones are gold dust (snap DevAussie's  arm off) and new ones a worthwhile investment.

My advice, go to a car boot sale/flea market, pick up some different sized coffin planes and use a sanding machine to round off the base, you'll have to re-sharpen the blade to match the curve but this can be achieved pretty easily. Its a cheap alternative/replacement and can be quite rewarding to think that you've shaped your own tools for a specific job.

Might mention here that there is a Woodworking show in Somerset next weekend (in Martock, Somerset) - its called the Yandles Woodworking show and there will be many different people there with live demonstrations and tools for sale. Any people in the area should go to it, see how some of the Chair makers use travishers and pick up advice on sharpening etc.

I'm going to pop to the Yandles woodworking show over the weekend. If anyone is interested in anything specific and wants me to look at it etc, just let me know.

Here is a link showing details of the show.

I would love to get hold of a convex spokeshave or a travisher. They seem pretty hard to find without spending alot of money!
