Wrights willow grading - a joke!!
« on: September 01, 2009, 07:05:10 PM »

I've just been reading through the wrights website and was looking at their grading system

http://www.cricketbatwillow.com/blades.php

Anyone else think that they are setting their standards far too low. Furthermore, they also go on to detail reasons why the bats with 4 grains will eventually provide performance equal to bats with narower grains - it seems to me that this is an extremely convenient cover story for them to push through a lot of cheaper and younger willow - although i probably couldnt notice the difference between a bat with 25 grains and one with 4, i would always go for more grains as opposed to less............would all of you buy a grade 1 £300 GM OR GN bat with just 4 grains and some marking on it? I didnt think so.

This is just the one on their site, manufacturers have a much more thorough willow grading sheet with about 10 more grades on.

I had a chat with Jeremy when he was in Australia recently, he said there were about 20 grades.

Be careful how you read the grading, plus remember that often they will send what they like, what are you going to do about it? nothing, they have the market sewn up. The wording will be, "A typical Grade 1", this means that they can put whatever they like in the mix and claim that the spec given given does not apply to all clefts. Also they split the rounds as tight as possible so many clefts will be missing strips off the back and prevent decent shapes being made. Ask Redback about his last order. Also they discount a lot off the standard price list, 40% or more for the bigger customers.
