ha ha...it would make sense if the bats were collected over an extended period of time; say 10-15 yrs. But some guys own a lot of new bats. IMO, if you r a good batsman, then you know which bat works for you and you stick to it. You don't play Russian Roulette with your bats before each innings and decide  ;)

You'd be surprised mate, I have 13 or 14 right now and except for a few almost all have seen some use in nets. Although there are only 4 that get match time and it is a russian roulette before the game...mind you I wouldn't call myself a batsman lol

Personally I have very funny with my bats and indeed all my kit. I clean the scuff sheet after most knocks as I personally like my kit looking as new and clean as possible. I also have a scuff sheet on every one of my bats. I would also change the grip on my main match bat 4/5 times in a season, partly to keep it looking clean and also because I think the grip is very important she batting as is gloves and the quality of the plans. Also wipe pads down. A bit OCD some may say.

Nothing wrong with a bat covered in red marks, but what I can't stand is the marks left by old/discoloured balls and also some bowling machine balls leave dirty marks. At our club nets the back rubber matting along the side of the synthetic nets, which we use for throw downs and bowling machine practice, leave dirty black marks on the balls which as a result end up on the face of the bat. Looks like I've been hitting coal. Had to get some nail polish remover and get rid of them, but a nice smattering of red cherries is what I like!

As much as I love the look of a brand new bat, nothing quite beats a well loved bat with some character.

Can't beat a bat that looks well used, plenty of cherries and darker in colour because if oiling. Gives it some character.

Its a bit disappointing though when your first mark on your bat is on the back of the blade via a bit of a machete like sweep/slash that you are only  a bit early on!!

Ah. But nothing is more priceless than the facial expression of first slip as the ball flies past his right ear.......
I think smith is one of those 'lucky undies' guys, if you're making runs, dont change anything..... I would find it hard not to get the sandpaper out if I was his team mate.

For those bat cleaners out there - try some eucalptus oil, i have been using it the past few weeks and it works nicely and keeps things smelling nice.

When cleaning up the face of my bat. I like to leave as many of the cherries around the middle of the bat and the completely clear the edges of any marks. At least it looks like you can middle a few - even if it was from last season !

I watched Smith's kit bag review at lunch during the third test match, he said he doesn't put a scuff sheet on his bats as he believes it allows his bats to open up. Once they begin to crack he puts fiberglass tape on them.
