Butterfly stained bats
« on: January 04, 2014, 12:14:08 PM »

Saw a question thought I would keep it off anybody topic

Why more and more.

Less quality wood around if you look at the forum over the last 5 years buttefiled stained bats used to be considered 2nds and cosmetic defects and sold as such. Where not talking about small stained bats but big stains.

I have played with a few big stained bats found no issue with them good or bad but in a cosmetic way they are very low grade.

There are less genuine grade bats around.

Bat selling follows what is avalible.

I would not pay over 100 pound for a badly stained bat

I think the main draw with Butterfly willow is that many people claim they perform better and for longer. I'm quite interested in finding out so might pick one up just as a net bat later in the year to see how they go.

Going back further (I've seen some vintage adverts/posters) Butterfly bats were the 'in' thing, they were what everyone looked for, and commanded a price accordingly.

The current trend for cosmetically flawless bats has seen their popularity drop, but they are on the way back, and i agree this may partly be because less of the 'good' wood is available.

A bat is a bat.
If someone wants a butterfly bat and is happy with the price, why not?

What's worse is high Rrp prices that use lower quality wood and try and pass it off as something it isn't.

Too true just goes to show the willow merchants are kings really

I remember two tone commanding a 400 pound price tag a couple of years ago heartwood was the rage now it de classed .

I can understand why the shops are hand picking currently though some I te higher grade bats in shops are quite poor.

I think Mr aldred answered the question in his thread. There is a load available.

Vulcan has been selling them and raving about them for the last couple of years

Personally I think there ugly and as said they are easily grade 4. Saying that I picked up the BlankBat one for £95 + 3x 3000 worded reviews. At that price and where it was made should = excellent value.

Easily grade 4 but then that's based purely on the aesthetics of a cleft.

If there are two bat makers raving about the performance of these bats then maybe it's time we get over our fascination with ruler straight, 8 grained bats.

Having said that, I don't think I'd be as quick to show my shiny new butterfly bat off at winter nets...

Is there a line of thinking that butterfly-stained bats have greater performance or is it more a case of butterfly stains have no negative impact?

Not yet, I just haven't had time with work and Xmas. I will start knocking it in next week when I get a day off.
