Bat shelf life

Just want to know what you guys think of bat shelf life?

Is it worth buying a bat that has been sat on a shelf in a shop for 3-4 years?

Do bats start to degrade at all over time?

Dependant on how it's been stored/shop conditions. It may have gained weight/moisture. Or it may have dried out a little bit more.


Light sand, oil and a knock in and it be fine.

As Chris has said, it should be fine.
Light sanding, oil and knock it in and you're good to go.

The other thing you should be aware of is that PKI bat is likely to need a full knock in if it has been in the shop for a while. I seem to recall James Laver saying that a bat that has been left unused can become less knocked in as the willow fibres decompress, if left for a long enough period of time. I'm not sure how this might affect pressing though, but I suspect the theory is similar.
