Retro? Or modern?
« on: March 03, 2014, 04:32:35 PM »

Hey folks. thought I might treat myself to a new pair of pads and gloves this season.

I really identify with the modern retro 'gentleman cricketer' ethos of Millichamp & Hall, and love their Distinction (now T2) softs with tan detailing. (I have their canvas cricket bag and get a lot of favourable comments). However, I'm after a snug, lightweight pair of pads (I'm looking at Youths or Small Mens) and these might not fit the bill. At 'just over 2lbs' they're not the lightest around, and according to 'It's Just Cricket's' video review, they're a bit bulky around the knee. They're damn well made, though.

I'm also looking at a pair of pads and gloves from Puma - the Platinum 5000 range, to be specific. Folk seem to rate Puma softs and these fellas look the business, and are nice and light at 740g.

So - anyone have any experience of either? I'm pretty torn...

Update on this - after much (too much) deliberation, I plumped for the Pumas in the end - and teamed them with the Platinum 5000 gloves, too. After a couple of nets, I've no regrets. Stylish, well put together, fantastically lightweight, but with great protection. Full review on AOC here:
