Bad balance (Johnny Bairstow style)
« on: May 06, 2014, 12:58:03 PM »

I've used Johnny Bairstow as a reference as waatching Durham vs Yorks yesterday Nasser Hussain picked up on this issue but I missed him talking about what to work on to improve it.

My balance isnt great when batting, I after playing a shot, I tend to move my back leg to rebalance myself.

From doing throwdowns club players have advised me my head comes quite low and move towards off too much.

I tend not to get my front foot as far forward as I should, a problem coming from having a week knee so trying to keep weight off it. At the moment I'm doing stretching/lunging to try change that but haven't felt much improvement.

What exercises can I work on to get my head going forwards and staying up high, to strengthen my knee/posture/balance. I've been getting a lot of back ache when batting for more than 15 mins which I think may be down to my posture too (as well as on going health nuisances)

What drills can I run through throw downs to get everything moving correctly?

I don't know if he saved it but Buzz did have a video of me batting last year. If you could post that Buzz that'd be really useful. If not i'll try film myself batting sometime.

Try going with your head and shoulders towards the ball. I had this problem and have taught myself as (almost a trigger movement, but shhhhh don't tell anyone) to lean towards where the ball is coming from so that weight is already over front foot. This means that when the ball is released and I step forwards my balance is better than it would be if I were to lunge forwards.

When it comes to strengthening knees and balance pistol squats will help, if you're unable to do them any exercise that's done on one leg will challenge your core stability and aid in  improving balance. Dunno what drills you can run through throw downs but at least for me, at times, good balance has made up for poor footwork.

I heard Bairstow batted well?

He went OK, was never out - got a horrible LBW decision and knew it.

It wasn't a big enough criticism to say he was batting badly, but he'd play a shot and then take a step with his back leg to balance himself.

Nasser was pointing it out as something which he needed to work on.

Isn't getting your head low sometimes considered a good thing - particularly against spinners?
