Foot movement on balls slightly down the leg side?
« on: May 09, 2014, 10:44:38 PM »

Last season I used to get out lot of times trying to flick full/good length deliveries down the leg side against quick bowlers, so I completely stopped playing the flick shot and started leaving anything down the leg ,after that I was able to score some decent scores in latter part of last season. Even started this season with fifty and few decent knocks. Any thing short I'm sort of ok playing the pull/hook shot or even gliding down to fine leg.

But I feel I'm missing  out on lot of scoring opportunities down the leg side, I try to play them balls towards mid on as some suggested here in the past but by the time I get in to the position to play an on drive it is too late.

I also opened the stance a bit to allow me to play leg side shots freely,  but this is slightly effecting my off side shots at the moment though it's not a major problem , I feel I managed not to get LBW after I opened my stance. Although this hasn't helped me with getting any runs down the leg side so far.

So are there any drills or foot movements I can practice to overcome this issue?

Any help if appreciated .

I'm getting a similar issue. Recently I was simply playing and missing at what should be regulation leg glances and flicks. Was told I wasn't getting across. For some reason, opening the face of the bat helped (but that was by bringing my top wrist further over the handle, if that makes sense) and I was scoring brilliantly off my pads, and it didn't end up affecting my off side game either. Maybe try that?

My guess would be your not getting your weight through the line of the ball. For example you play to the leg side yet your weight is going to the offside. If you were to video this I would expect to see your head out of line when making ball contact. This makes it harder to play the ball, meaning you'll either miss it and get out, or not time it very well/hit on the inside edge. Plus the weight is going in the opposite direction will all factor into a poor shot.

A drill. Set up cones on the on side where you are likely to play the shot to. Then get into the on drive stance. Drop feed and play the shot and follow through by running to the cone you hit it to. What this does is makes you get your weight going to the target. You will find that if you play your shot with your weigh (head) over to the off side you won't back able to run to where your trying to hit. Then build this up to bobble feeds, and then start from a natural batting stance. I would even get a bowling machine on a half volley leg side line and go through all the stages also.

Obviously when you play the shot in a game you want to be still and balanced, this drill just gets the body position and weight going in the right direction. Hope this helps and good luck.

However this is just guess work without seeing you bat or a video.

(Ps how do I know this...I do the exact same!!!)

Our coach worked on this with us in pre season. If it's quite a straight leg stump line, you normally don't need to move your feet at all. Just hit through the ball towards mid on.

If it's full and wide down leg side, leave it! In our league that's a wide! If it's short though, hit it as hard as you can!

draw your front foot back into your body and slightly open your body up, this allows you go get you head in line with the ball. I had this problem last season too, takes a lot of practise to get the movement to become natural

Mostly leading edges but one time a faint edge down the leg side to the keeper , plus one dismissal of the pads down the leg side to the keeper while I tried to play them the same way , horrible decision but I'd put down that one under the same category.

In that case, play strigher, soulds like youre trying to turn the ball down to leg too much, it will go down there all by its self, don't brake your wrist until you feel the ball on the bat.

Don't worry about the caught behinds.
