Captaincy
« on: June 01, 2014, 07:49:17 PM »

Right, so our regular captain has taken ill (full on hospitalisation!) and I've been promoted from vice skip to full skip for next week's match.

It all seemed ok at the AGM when iI was 'volunteered' let's say, but now it's all a bit real.

I've never captained before & have only been back playing for a couple of years. Does anyone have any hints, tips & advice for a Newby skipper?

Cheers

Lean on the experienced guys in the team. Collaborate, involve people and try to enjoy it if it's not a long term thing.

I agree when we play without our experienced captain the senior players step up and help out as much as possible. Suggesting who bowls, any fielding changes etc.

Take the lead, but be prepared to take advice as well.

All the above, don't let things get too static, don't be afraid to chop and change the bowling or tweak the field a bit.

Don't follow the ball when setting the field and get people to do stuff like collecting teas, sight screens and boundary rope for you and have fun!

As above, at our level (Sunday friendly biff) we get a fair few people whose playing experience is limited and are there for the social aspect and to get involved. It's always been big thing for me to get everyone who's in the 11 to do something, on and off the field. They will feel like they've contributed, that they've got something for their money and they'll more than likely want to come back.

Make sure you listen to others too, I don't know where you normally field but someone else will always see something you've missed. Above anything make sure you enjoy it, in a certain sense it's made me calmer as a batsman and not throw my wicket away as often.

I'm sure you'll have a few equally experienced cricket brains to help you out there on the field.
