One handed gym workout!
« on: August 20, 2014, 08:24:04 PM »

I'm an extremely portly, 40 something poor batsman, who is very strong on my bottom hand.

I'm right handed and very strong on this side, but weak on my left.

Has anybody tried a weights programme, just working predominantly on your weaker side( and can recommend the type of exercises)?

Its a very bad idea I believe working on a single side. About a year ago I started going to gym a lot to lose weight etc and had a PT it became very evident my left arm and wrist were no where near as strong as right. When I mentioned just using left arm or heavier weighted left sided weights I was told this will have no benefit. Apparently it's the same basis as your eyes. One eye is far more dominant than the other and he explained its the same with the muscles in arms legs etc dependent in what hand you use the most etc.

Others may tell me I'm wrong but only telling what I was told mate.

Find a weight routine that you can do right handed but struggle left handed.

Helps you do both sides whilst strengthening one more.

I've just come home from the gym, got a great arm routine that's helped me a lot with my weaker left if you want I'll send it to you.

Do everything weights wise with your left arm first.  If you can only do 5 reps with your left arm then follow it by only doing 5 with your right arm.

Bicep curls using the same weight will be a good start mate.

Yeah you have to be very careful. Exercising just one side of your body will lead to an imbalance in your muscles and will almost certainly cause you a lot of injury problems.

I guess that makes sense.

The trouble is I busted my left shoulder around 5 years ago, so since then( and before to a certain extent), I've become more and more "right handed".

I've noticed it more this season, that I'm much more dominant on the leg side, and wondered if a bit of strength ting would improve playing in the v/off side.

My exact thought when I read the thread title, great minds think alike?

I agree to start with the left arm but alternate between arms and stop whenever the weaker side hits failure (assuming an isolation exercise) that way you always get 1 extra rep on the weaker side, if you work both sides with equal weight the weaker side will eventually catch up, never ever just work out one side of the body unless you're injured.

Train with kettlebells and your grip strength of both hands will go through the roof. Kettlebell swings and Turkish get ups are a great place to start, check out Pavel Tsatsouline's Programme Minimum, or Simple &Sinister.

That is one solution I had tried..
Trouble is, it makes me look even more ungainly( if that were possible!)
