Thoughts on my batting in the nets?
« on: September 10, 2014, 09:11:50 PM »

Had to video myself batting for my A-level PE for self analysis and since I had the footage I thought I might aswell upload it and get your thoughts. Feedback is most appreciated.

Hi mate, by no means am I a batsman, but have been lucky enough through Middlesex to work with Ben Scott, Mark Ramprakash etc as batting coaches.

I may still be talking complete trash so feel free to ignore it!

I just noticed, especially early on and occasionally later to, your drives tend to slice a little squarer then where I would expect to see them go. Perhaps this is because the bat occasionally comes from wide of off stump, say first slip area, instead of a little straighter? Or also, maybe you break your wrists on the shot a little early, rather than holding them firmer, letting it go straighter? And it just looks like a slice with only some of the bat face presented to the bowler. Like I said just some thoughts, may be complete garbage!

Otherwise looked like you were gunning it! Very strong off the back dog!

Looks good.

When driving, rather than you back foot sitting on the ball of your foot, try using the left edge of the your back right foot with it 90 degrees.

Using the toes of the back foot can often lead to over balancing when playing powerful drives, causing the Backfoot to rotate and bat to play in a arc as the batsman squares up.

Using the edge of the back foot will prevent over balancing and help with keeping you over the ball.

Pretty decent mate!!

From what i can need to keep your back leg still when driving, and stay upright in your drives dont go down on your back knee, so your probably not getting your full weight over the ball and also will casue you slice the ball more square as your bottom hand comes more into play.

If you look to dip your front shoulder to the ball then your head will go meaning your right shoulder wont come into play and keep and hopefully keep you slightly more balanced.

A drill you could try is having somone feed under arm half volleys and just use your top hand. If you nail the ball and the bat is pointing to where the ball goes and its on the floor you know you have got into a strong stable position with full weight in the shot.

Then bring two hands onto the bat and when nailed it again the forearm of your bottom hand should be in line with where the ball has gone and your blade.

Another good drill is to do tennis ball rolls, someone rolls the ball to you and again if you nail it along the floor then you are in the correct postion.
