Spartan Helmets - albion copies?
« on: October 27, 2014, 10:57:10 AM »

Spartan helmets have released 2 new helmets in Australia. I went into Rebel Sport today and had a look at them both.
The cloth version looks like an exact replica of an albion debut. Same shape and design.
The plastic version is a little different however. It looks and feels cheap. The helmet itself is like a Woodworm Tough Nut except with a new style albion grill.
The grill as stated above is almost identical to albion's 2012 design. The only difference is that the grill plate has the single holes instead of the slide holes on the current albion helmets.
Wonder how albion feel about Spartan using a similar design?

Let's be honest, everything spartan design is seriously rank.

The bats aren't even upto much.

Imagine Spartan's budget given to a B3, Salix, Laver...

Bit harsh, the softs look fine, and the bats are solid.

You mean solid SS bats stickered up differently with double the price tag...

They aren't the only ones to be taking the mickey with price tags in all fairness and someone (we the punters) got to pay for the sponsored superstars. I don't think aldred b3 etc are a like for like comparison for spartan though. Branding leaves a lot to be desired, will certainly appeal to school boys.

Agree that given the money at their disposal they could have invested a little more in the product itself.

Have seen the Spartan helmets, not sure what to make of them yet but we have taken a little punt and ordered a few.

Spartan bats are available at all price points from sub £100 right to the very top. I would say at the most popular price points (£100 - £200) a Spartan bat is very comparable to an equivalent TON. I personally feel the top end TON and Spartan are expensive for what they are, but they aren't the main bulk of sales and this is probably down to the (for want of a better word) 'overpricing.' That being said, Spartan were unable to keep up with demand for MC LE's and 1000's at various points through the season.

Both bats were around the £150 mark when being sold at normal prices, both now much cheaper in our mega sale topic. :)

The above seems reasonable to me. Let's see what you make of the helmets.

The plastic Gladiator helmet is very average from what I saw. Apart from the grill which is an albion design, the plastic helmet shell is really cheap looking. It's not the same as the albion elite series but as I mentioned earlier, a lot like the woodworm tough nut shell. The peak looks thin and flexible and the plastic used on the shell doesn't look very good.
The cloth helmet though isn't as bad. It looks quite adequate actually as I'm certain it's exactly the same as the Albion debut barring different embroidery, fit pads and a few cosmetic differences.
The thing for me is why would I want a Spartan like that when I could get an original albion?

You might not, but Spartan seem to be targeting a younger audience.

Little Johnny sees Michael Clarke/MS Dohni on TV using Spartan gear.
They want new kit, their Xmas/Birthday list reads:
Spartan Michael Clarke/MS Dohni bat
Spartan Michael Clarke/MS Dohni pads
Spartan Michael Clarke/MS Dohni gloves
Spartan Bag
Spartan thigh pad
Spartan box
Spartan helmet

And so on...
Might not appeal to everyone but I can see them selling and there will definitley be a market for them.

Helmets are an afterthought for brands like Spartan. "How can we sell another piece of kit to someone who wants the full gear"

Stick to a specialist, like Albion, Masuri or Ayrtek.
