My new SS gear - softs
« on: September 19, 2014, 09:56:44 PM »

Evening all

As some of you will have seen, all my new gear arrived today and I put some hurried snaps on during my lunch break. Here are my first thoughts on the soft goods I received today.

I will review the bag and bats separately to avoid too much waffling on one thread.

SS Platino Batting Pads

I got these as an impulse buy on eBay based mainly on the clean look of the exterior and the giveaway price of £24.99
I know softs are cheaper in India but I wasn't foolish enough to expect a top quality pad for that money.

Looks 9/10
Now I like the traditional look for pads and don't like too much branding or logos on show, the more white on show the better for pads!
With 8 canes and a three bar knee roll these look great, and there are only 2 SS logos on there. Excellent in my opinion! I also like the colour blue scheme inside and on the straps.

Protection 7.5/10
SS have rated these as a 6. I was pleasantly surprised. These are rather thin, so I was expecting to feel impacts through these. Being the dedicated reviewer I am I proceeded with a mallet test and was shocked. Near the shin I felt some impact but no pain, and the knee roll provided more than enough protection.
I even gave the top hat a good hit and it provided good protection again. Excellent protection and value for money when you take the price into account.

Comfort 9/10
These are incredibly light at 730grams per pad, they wrapped round my leg very well fresh out of the packet and the straps aren't too long. Perfect, well not quite. There is no knee cup, which isn't a deal breaker for me, not padded straps, but these are a luxury rather than a necessity.

SS Super Test Batting Gloves

Looks 8/10
Sausage fingers, great colour scheme and wonderful design.
May be too much colour for those who prefer an all white glove but they look great to me.

Protection 9/10
Will stick to the SS rating for these.
Very good, fingers feel solid and performed well in the mallet test (yes I am that stupid!)

Comfort 7.5/10
Tight fitting, easy to grip the bat and feel nice inside the glove.
Fingers fit strangely at the end of the gloves but that's something I'll get used to so is a non issue.

SS Limited Edition Batting Gloves

Looks 9/10
Sausage fingers, even better colour scheme than the super test and a wonderful design again.
Same comment about the White glove fans as above.

Protection 9.5/10
Superior protection to the super test.
Probably the most protective pair of gloves I've ever tried.

Comfort 9/10
A very similar feel to the Super test, but with superior palms and the fingers are a better fit.
These really are excellent gloves.
