I think the issue here is your captain, ive seen this happen a lot with my own club captains past and present. Bring someone up from the 2s and basically get them to fill in. It's a very short sighted view (unless its a youth team player short term to give experience). You mention you bowl as well, so the skipper could have given you 3 to 4 overs each week and got you up the order at the earliest opportunity. When i captained i always tried to ensure guys coming up from the 2s felt they were contributing, i often got comments from established players like 'why are you bowling him', to which I would always respond I may need to him to bowl 10 overs next week. As a captain you can't expect players in your team to do nothing for 5 games them contribute when it suits you, it doesn't work like that and i see this happen all the time.
Keep practising and enjoying your game and if the situation continues next year raise to your captain over a beer and ask him where you fit in.
