Kookaburra Instinct 300
« on: December 16, 2014, 09:28:26 AM »

Hi all,

thought I'd upload some quick phone pics of the Instinct 300 I bought from Asad last week. After seeing the Kookaburra thread Asad uploaded and the knowing the reputation he has for quality bats I wanted to check one out.

I had a Kahuna once and wasn't that taken with it (The toe felt really dead) but whilst looking at the different shapes Kook are now offering (Hooray!) I saw the two Instinct 300 bats and yes, whilst the one that I chose did have a lot of grains it was the shape that I liked the look of more than anything. I'm not a massive fan of big edges and I much prefer to have a higher spine and less concaving and this bat fitted the bill. I also like playing off both the front and back foot, and according to the specs (and Paul from IJC's review) this bat is ideal for all round play so I decided to take the plunge.

The edges are 28-30mm and the spine is 59-60mm. The toe, incidentally is nice and chunky and the finishing on the bat is exemplary.

The bat arrived next day (Great service as always Asad!) and to say I was impressed when I pulled the bat out is an understatement. I've never really understood the grading system at Kookaburra, and unless this bat has some serious flaws underneath the stickers this bat looks as good as any players bat I've seen - yet it's the entry model!

It has 17 equally spaced grains with a touch of heartwood on the outside edge and a tiny pin knot. The grains are pretty much straight along the blade and straight through the bat.

The bat was stated at 2.8 and weighs 2.87 on my digital scales so spot on.

i haven't even began to start knocking in yet so can't comment on ping but the bat appears to be softly pressed as flicking the face with fingernails has caused some marking already - Hopefully I'll get a chance to do it over the festive period :-)

I can't recommend Asad's services enough - the quality is unbelievable for the money. I don't like to spend more than £150 on a bat so to snap this up for just over a £100 is a bargain in my eyes.

There grading must be very messed up! I think it is fair to say that with smaller companies you get more consistent value for money as if you buy a grade you usually get it! But the larger organisations they have so many miss grades both ways that you can either get a stunner or not with no real explanation! Top bat for 100 of lizzies pounds!

Is that even a kookaburra?? So far away from their massive edges, silly concaving and average grainage iv seen recently. Looks lovely and hope it plays the way it looks. I had a kahuna 1250 and was nowhere near this. Personally id remove the purple instinct 300 sticker under the main badge

Had a look at one of these in VKS on saturday and was really impressed.  Really liked the profile and the pick up was perfect for me, quite wand like!  I'll be interested to hear how it performs.

I've seen players graded bats worse looking than that!

Lovely looking stick. Can't believe its an entry level bat. Strange grading at Kookaburra I'd say?!

Looks a great bat and I hope it goes really well for you.

I think we get to hung up on how a bat looks when it comes to grade.

Correct this bat looks great but that doesn't mean it should be a top grade bat.

When I went to Rob Packs place he graded his bats just on how they went off the mallet if it went like a gun but looked a bit ugly then it was still a top grade.

At the end of the day it's only us looking at our bats that see the grains, what impresses the oppo is the ball racing away to the boundary!!

Correct on rpc mines only 7 grains but the performance is something else that's why I got
It is at the end of the day about hitting the ball and getting value
That's not to say this kook won't perform but agree on grading differences between most brands

Knowing it was bought from Asad good performance is expected, it would have been hand selected. It's a lovely looking piece of willow & why waste money on higher grades when you can get something like this.

Can't say hand picking means performance.. usually just means nice looking.. after all, you don't see many ugly sticks with retailers :)

also, I'd trust a bat maker over a retailer tbh. (not saying a bat maker may not be trying to spin a fast one etc but you get the point)

I would have to agree about trusting a bat maker! They usually are there to make an honest living which a vested interest in you being happy with your product. Most larger companies however much their CSR team will tell you they care about you they really really don't. In most cases products are only purchased once, and so people focus on new customers not retaining old ones!
