What Standard to play??
« on: December 26, 2014, 09:58:01 AM »

Guys,
I injured myself in mid sept playing up in Yorkshire and although it's got better and I can run etc, my knee still isn't right. Now, I'm not looking to make a decision until april anyway but thought I'd ask you guys for your thoughts...

My options are:

a) Play for the firsts and accept I may have to 'hide' in the field, but as an opener if could impact running between the wickets as the guys I bat with are all pretty quick..
b) Just tell them I've had a injury and don't feel upto PHYICALLY playing firsts and just open in the seconds where it starts to not matter..

The up sides - I wouldn't feel I was costing the team 5-10 singles a innings
The downsides - I'm probably the 2nd best batsmen in the side and avg'd 36 last time in this division and I'm better now than I was then so as far as the actual cricket goes... I'm more than good enough. so I'd be playing well below my 'level' tbh, so it might get boring or even be unfair on oppos to basically be facing a first teamer.

Obviously as I say, the decision won't be made until April anyway so still 3 months for it to improve but I'm starting to think it might be fine to play etc but just have to accept I can't dive about etc like I used to (which, tbh makes a good fielder into a top fielder). Meaning to me, you shouldn't play in the firsts unless you are fully fit.

Do you have the option  to play a few first games and then  decide. If you are a good catcher you can patrol the long on/off areas. Fair bit of ground to cover but you get more time to react.

Oh, I could just not tell them I'm carrying the injury and see how it goes. That's not an issue team wise, just myself not feeling that playing injured is right. I won't be at long on/off  because we have 3 guys who have that role (they can catch well, move quickly and have bullet arms.. I have only the catching and had decent movement.. no arm :) )

Be 100% honest with the captains/selectors and let them make the decision

Well in that  case if there  is someone else  who can contribute  more in your place then  you move to second else carry on with first. You will feel right if you play where ever  you are adding  value  to the team.

Tell the club/selectors/captains what the issue is and how it may effect you.

Then let them pick were you play.

If your as good with the bat as you say. They'll put you in the firsts anyway. As missing a few singles won't matter with the job you do.

If it gets worse or is worse than expect.  You may end up in seconds to help your recovery. Which then technically means your in 2nds on merit. And therefore you dont have to think your making it unfair for oppos.

I had the same last year. Told them I was highly unfit.  Running would be an issue. As would stamina over the day. They still put me in 1sts every week(not my most prolific season, got nice 80 at the end, and won the midweek avgs) And i just fielded at slip all season (took 8 catches).

I believe I played my part, granted I may have done more personally in 2nds, but I'm not sure anyone coming into 1st would have added much more.

Based on your posts I believe you should continue as you are  in the 1st team also i don't think you can quantify costing the team runs also having tore my knee in 2012 i know from experience you  should be able  to adapt yourself and your fielding accordingly.

Having a fair amount of experience with knee injuries, the key is to be honest about what you can do and especially what you can't (for me its always been turning - I have a similar turning circle to the Bismarck).  you'll probably find that with a good quality knee brace and sensible management, you can do most things pretty well for the time being...

Yeah same here
I missed most of one season, with a dislocated knee
The following season I took it as easy as I could get away with,,if that means dropping down to the seconds, then so be it.

Don't think about it until April and you have played a pre season friendly or two. In the mean time get as fit as you are able.

Agree with this. Your physical state right now is likely to be different to April. Undertake physio, so your best to get as fit as possible and see where you are when you actually have to make a decision.

You will know then what you need to do....
