Edge-Rounding
« on: March 18, 2015, 03:43:03 PM »

Would anyone care to give an idiot's guide to their edge-rounding techniques - particularly the bathtub method? Pictures would be especially useful.

Last time I tried the bath-tub method it left black marks on the edge of my bat, and the handle kept bashing Mrs Fattus in the armpit.

Haha should get yourself some marble worktops - work a treat for rounding the edges ;)

You can use the handle of your knocking in mallet as well as the bath tub

yep, ive used my mallet handle to do mine as like Fattus says sometimes the bath leaves a grey line down the edge of your bat. Either way the trick is to apply even pressure to the edges to compress and round them off evenly.

A really big heavy rolling pin works just nice for me.

I use a piece of stainless steel tubing that has been chromed and polished. Solid as a rock and doesn't leave any marks.

Hold the toe and the bottom of the Handel. The edge should be presented to the surface, at an angle, I.e neither the face or the edge are parallel to the bath top.
gently slide it back and fourth in a bow like action. Don't over do the pressure, particularly if there is a scuff sheet on the bat.  Do 10 - 20 passes then swop edges. Repeat, increasing the pressure and decreasingly the passes, check the progress after every few passes.

Ross - I think it would be better if you posted a pictoral guide of your bath-rubbing.

Make sure the tub is clean... The grey marks are probably the dead skin and soap residue on the bath!

I usually put a little linseed oil on the edge of the tub to aid lubrication (always do it without a scuff).  I do about 15 passes on each edge, then swap, and repeat until the edges are firm and can't be dented with a mallet.  usually takees about 15-20 mins.  Don't put pressure on the handle, you don't want to break it!
