Good Morning,

I was wondering if someone could help please. A friend of mine broke his bat at the weekend, we were going to watch England at Headingley the following day so he went to Allrounder and selected a new one, a Puma Evospeed which got delivered to him on Tuesday.

Today he has started knocking it in and has just noticed a small crack appear in the toe (pictured).

I wondered what advice to give him on its severity please and what he should do i.e. look to return it, ignore it etc? Obviously he wants to use it this Saturday if possible but doesn't want the bat cracking badly after a couple of games because of it.

Cant see how deep the crack is due to the toe guard but it does not matter as it was only brought days ago and not faced a ball in a match or nets don't risk it take it back ASAP.

Thanks for the comments.

He called them and they said to use it and if it gets worse they will repair/replace it. Not sure what sort of time frame that would be in.

I am not sure how happy I would be to take their word for it but I think he is just desperate to have a bat for Saturday.

It just seems like the sort of crack which could get much worse if you get a good yorker.

My advice would be to contact them again and state that as the bat as split at the back without being i used in a match you are concerned it is not fit for purpose. Also why use it and risk toe ending a Yorker which may damage the bat further and then be open to all the suggestions that could come with that.

You are right.

I have been back onto him and he is going to push to return it.

A small crack elsewhere you could maybe take a chance with but not the toe, and as you have said he is in his strongest position now as it is very new and has clearly not been used in a match.

That crack is just going to run if you use it. Take it in or email them a photo. They probably don't appreciate that it will break off if used.

He wasn't hitting the bat on the edge with a mallet was he? It's a very unusual crack.

What if the toe breaks in a game from a yorker. Will the retailer say toe damage is not covered ?
I think you should seriously ask for a return/exchange as it was bought only a few days back.

Best bet is to peel back the toe guard and have a proper look at it, take photos. If it's just a surface crack put some pva glue in it, sand it then tape it up. If it looks deeper then send it back.

Unless he's done something pretty unusual in the knocking in process I'd guess the crack was already there in some form or another. May have been a drying crack which was cut out but a little remained and was hidden by the toe guard. When knocking in its then started to split up the blade. Whatever has happened you should get it replaced/ a refund. . If it was purchased new id expect it to be replaced or a refund.

Hi guys i have a question for you ive purchased a GM mogul players edition (GM NOW). Even though it was ready to go i decided to put some time into knocking it in and rounding off the edges. Long story short a surface crack has developed vertically following the grain up from the toe to 2/3 of the way up (didnt realise it was cracking cause of edge tape). Ive almost sanded the crack out of the bat, my question is if i sand the crack out will that fix my surface crack problem or will it be a weak spot in the wood were it will always happen now (p.s the edge that had the crack running up the grain was heart wood if that matters)
