Worst Conditions Played in ?
« on: May 25, 2017, 07:15:49 AM »

Just wondering what the worst weather that you have played in

Last night a midweek 20/20 match we played in mist /fog where the only people who could see the ball where the batsmen bowler and keeper fielding was a lottery with directions been shouted out to where the ball was hit to

Played up at howarth west end at the start of one season
Opened the batting with snow blowing sideways into my eyes
Managed 5!! Overs before the match was abandoned and we had to dig the cars out of the snow , by the time we'd got changed etc

Played a midweek game many years ago,, had to bat through a thunderstorm, stupid really.

As a sixteen year old, took a fivefer in torrential rain, with a soapy ball off two paces, when ourselves and the opposition were playing for top of league status. The batsmen were given the opportunity to go off, but insisted on staying on. We won as the puddles on the wicket clearly made it stupid to continue.

Played in snow once. That was an experience.

We completed the guiness world record for the longest continous game of cricket played a few years back. The game itself went on for 105hours... For the first 2 days and nights it didn't stop raining at all!

A particular low point for me, was fielding for 3 hours in puddles, plastic bags tied over my boots trying to keep my feet warm/dry at 3am in the morning, wearing golf waterproof in 5degrees as the heavens gave us all they had!...

A  fair few years ago  i played a game , in Sydney,  with forcast temp high of 43c . We put a thermometer on the pitch for 30 min during lunch break ....it read 45.9c ( I'll never forget reading those numbers ! ).  There was no breeze at all . It was torture.
To make matters worse , our keeper was out ( his missus went into labour that morning) , and i was burdened with keeping duties . I don't deal with heat too well at the best of times , let alone having to wear keeping kit aswell.  At one point after taking a wicket our blokes were in a huddle congratulating the bowler. I asked a few blokes not to move and sat ( well , actually layed down) in their shadow for a minutes respite.
As a reward for enduring such heat ( for about 65 overs ) , once we finally bowled the opposition out I had to go out and open the batting . After about 5 overs the wind picked up and within minutes a thunderstorm started. I got drenched . I ended up with pretty bad sunburn and caught a cold from that game too ! Go figure .  ;)

A couple of years ago in leafy, temperate Surrey I played a preseason at Pyrford, where hailstones were bouncing off my baldy head!

Barbados 1998 in a sugar cane field against I cant remember who because I had that desert heat disease they got during the films the bloke walks across sand dunes

plus 40 degrees and they were over 300 after 35 overs.

post match food and entertainment top class but with the games starting at midday we were knackered after 10 overs.

2 instances
first one was 45.6 degrees which is the hottest day recorded at the RAAF Base at Amberley in Brisbane. to make matters worse i had had a skin cancer removed few weeks prior and still have 8 stitches in my foot

Second was a junior rep carnival
Storms cells equivalent to Category 1 Cyclones hit 4 days out of 5. we only completed 2 days, final was 32 degrees and 95% humidity without a cloud in the sky!

played a few with persistent drizzle as well as 30+ degree heat which are both grim but the worst was playing a game on a fairly decent summers day with a relentless strong wind blowing acorss the ground all day....it never let up and battered us all game, horrible.

Played on a ground which had a proper road running through it. What was worse was that the road wasnt even in parallel to the pitch. It was around 25 yards behind the stumps at one end. Fielding was an absolute nightmare and there were continuous disruptions all thru the game!

Whilst not extreme as other experience on here, my worst conditions were my first tour match in Sri Lanka a number of years ago.  I had only flown into Colombo the day before the first match.  Whilst not massively hot (35 degrees), I have never experienced humidity like it.  I bowled 8 overs on the spin, and thought I was going to die at the end of the spell.  The original plan for the tour games was 50 over per side.  This quickly turned into 40 overs.  To cap the first game off nicely, we ran out of drinks before the end of the first innings as the planned breaks of 10 overs went to 5 overs after the first 5 overs of the game.

Hats off to the pros who play test matches there !!

A couple to throw in - at Aysgarth, 1995, when there was a wall of snow a foot deep to mark the boundary - and at Northallerton a few weeks later, when there was the most spectacular electrical storm maybe a half mile away.

The best though was about five years ago, when we stayed on in a proper cloudburst for the oppo to score the five runs they needed to win the game.
