Taping fingers
« on: January 14, 2015, 03:58:46 PM »

I've had a few bad knocks to my thumbs over the last few seasons, I'm sure you all have too. So I was wondering if many people tape their joints or use other methods to protect their poor battered digits?

A physio showed me a good way to tape thumbs, it is used by boxers to stop them bending the joints if they catch their thumbs when throwing punches. It helps to protect the 2nd (or middle) thumb knuckle from damage when the ball bends your thumb back. Skip to 1.04 in the video. You don't have to go around the hand you can tear it off so the tape is only on the thumb and a bit of the hand so it looks a bit like a charity ribbon.

Personally I'd find that far too restrictive. I taped up finger joints but only after taking a knock or a break but never the thumb. The way that's taped I'm sure you wouldn't get a real feel for the ball

I use strapping tape when keeping but avoid taping over the joints. Plus I only tape the at risk little fingers and thumbs.

The best way is to not tape all the way around the hand which keeps it flexible. I did this last season and it really helped when I got hit. I prefer to prevent injuries rather than respond to them if it is at all possible. Appreciate it would cause a distraction for others.

Only our fastest bowler that ever causes any problems as our pitch has quite poor carry and you have to get uncomfortably close to make sure you get the edges.

If you aren't taping the joints there isn't much point of wearing tape at all. The whole point of tape is to keep the joints in place if you don't take it cleanly. If you're having issues with the rest of the hand/fingers it's probably better to wear thicker inners

I use micropore tape on all my joints, apart from my thumbs.  Ex-Durham and Sussex keeper, Martin Speight gave me this tip during a coaching session a few years ago and  I've gone with it ever since.  I'm sure it's partly a psychological thing, but it works for me.

I'm considering doing this for next year as keeping too many times a week to have my hands full recover before i next keep!  Can someone take/find a picture of your hands look when taped in the micropore tape?

Think I'll give it a try too after my first finger break from cricket kept me out for about 3 months in 2014.

I have been taping my finger joints for the last year or two but injured my finger despite this. Taped my middle and fourth fingers together from the outside of my wicket keeping glove today and found it a great help. Did a great splinting job. Would recommend for anyone playing with an injured (esp. bruised, hyperextended) finger.

Seen lots of other keepers tape their finger joints but also the little finger and ring fingers on the actual gloves themselves
