Hello,

I had ordered 2 Reserve bat, after a long time and constant reminder to LW received the bats with Special Reserve Sticker. I called them back with the pictures, luckily I got it reviewed by James himself. He confirmed that those cleft are reserve and there was an error in applying the stickers. Since the this is my first LW bat I am little skeptical. Please have a look at the picture and would like to hear your comments.

Thanks for reading this post.

Nice bats.

Never had a LW or see many where I play so I'm not a expert, but based on their website they are different profiles. Based on edge width i'd say they are Reserves.

Give us a side on shot.

I've had a few Lavers (Reserves, Private Bin,  Special Reserves and Legend). The profile won't tell you much as you can have whatever profile you like in all their range.

Special reserve will usually look uglier, and have some form of imperfection/s or have a bit of heart wood. While this doesn't affect performance for the most part, it's not as good to look at cosmetically and some do place an importance on the looks.

These look like they are all sapwood, with the grains even and straight thought the front and back, so I'd say it was just a mistake with the stickers and you have nothing to worry about. I personally prefer the red stickers myself.

More importantly, how do they perform?

I'd be pretty annoyed if that had happened to me. Ask for a set of Reserve stickers to put on the bat, it's just not right to have stickers 2 grades below the actual bat. (Unless specifically requested)

The bats themselves look pretty decent, although hard to say as the lighting bleaches out the grains a little bit. The performance is the key, I have found that my Reserves have outperformed my Private Bin and Special Reserve bats. They sound a little bit 'clunky' upon contact, but the ball absolutely rockets off them. Quite a unique pressing, haven't quite come across any other bat that's quite like Laver!

Hope you get it all sorted out, I would trust James, as I've dealt with him a fair bit in the past. Just keep an eye on the weight, as it's almost certain to increase by an ounce over time!

The weight of the bat is 2.75lbs. There is this clunky noise which annoyed me a little bit. I have 2 matches coming up this weekend. I have just used it for one practice session, what do you guys suggest? Shall I take it to the game or wait for it to open up a little bit more.

Thanks again for your replies.

If James says they are Reserves, then they are Reserve bats.

You can ask for a set of stickers to apply yourself.

Don't wait, start using the bat. I have loved every Laver I own!

Reserve and Special Reserve relate to the grade of willow not profile shape

I have a reserve that is a couple of years old now. I found that it did take a while to 'open up' and have been told that L&W bats do take a little longer than average to do this. This could explain the sound you're referring to.

Also if they have carbo handles they will sound a lot different to your usual came handle.

If you have done a few throwdowns and around 2 nets take it to the game I suggest. I purchased a laver last year and asked it to be match ready and indeed it was pressed very well and I saw mallet marks as well. I was told to have around 30 mins throwdowns with it and it would be ready for nets.
