Viper Pro 900 - Broken (pics attached)
« on: April 27, 2015, 09:46:16 AM »

First game of the season on Saturday and mid-innings I notice my bat has broken immediately below the splice on the back, with cracks running down either side of the blade in a kind of upside down 'V' shape for about about 4/5 inches (see pictures below).

I bought the bat just under 12 months ago, I've emailed Kookaburra with plenty of pictures to see what they say, just curious as to what people's thoughts are on whether it can be fixed, Kookaburra will replace it or I'm just unfortunate and need to buy another?

It's cooked, depends where you bought it as to the warranty, you need to go through your retailer to try and sort it out.

Not sure without seeing it in the flesh, but that sort of cracking is usually the precursor to the blade shearing away in its entirity, so I would say you're done for.

As for Kookaburra, they were decent when I had a KAhuna split through the toe, but that was a lot sooner than 12 months - I fear they may well cite wear and tear to you.

I doubt if that bat will ever play the same if offered to repair. Bat is done and dusted, at best can be a net bat after the repair.

It does look cooked. I had one got at the handle last season, it played great with a lot of flex up until the handle fell out.

I saw 3 kookaburra kahunas do exactly the same thing (reverse v on back) last year at my club!! Think it may be due to the high spine/concaving and wood being quite dry to get the large profiles

Yes, I think you are nearly right. Isn't it something to do with the stress point just below the splice? I had this happen on the Jumbo profile bat and I know a few people mentioned the stress on the top half of the bat on impact causes cracks to appear in the least supported area on the bat of the bat. It's kind of like putting a heavy weight on a thin stick and it snapping, the cracking appears on the top in a v pattern while the bottom is still kind of attached. Not sure I have ever seen this on a full profiled bat, which proves a point I guess.

Can happen to any bat, the model isn't really too relevant in my opinion, although considering the Viper is just a Kahuna with red stickers, maybe you're on to something...

Contact the retailer. I'm never sure why people go direct to the manufacturer. They will need proof of purchase etc, they will also need you to post it to them. If you bring a broken bat back to us (i can't speak for other retailers) we post the bat for you, the manufacturer more often than not take our word for it on date of purchase so scrabbling round for a year old receipt isn't necessary, we can check our records if really needed and forward them our own copy of the receipt. We deal with the back and forth discussion with the returns department and then let you know of the hopefully happy outcome.

Yet another Kook did this to one of our guys yesterday...this time a 2014 ricochet. Same reverse v on back. Too much of a coincidence for me to consider a kook anytime in the near future

Seen it a few times too. I tried gluing a kook Blade that started to go, then taping, but its just delaying the inevitable. I had a bat go like that years ago. Terminal unfortunately.
