Refurbing a Polyarmoured bat
« on: June 29, 2016, 10:58:28 AM »

I have an old 'Clear Polyarmoured' bat arriving in the mail in the next few days.  It has been very well used, the face has a number of vertical splits between the grains and on the spine side there is what looks to be a nasty split about 1cm in from the edge, running about 3cm down by the toe.

I know most will say just sand the entire back and do a full refurb, however I really want to keep the stickers in tact and I had crap luck in the past removing/reapplying old stickers. I'm not to keen try it again this time.  This bat is around 27 yrs old & it's impossible to sticker sets anymore + I want to keep the bat in it's original condition as much as possible.

....So my question is in 3 parts:

1.  Has anyone attempted to sand back only lower face and edges of a bat, ........what was the result?

2.  If I do go ahead and sand the face + sand and repair the damage near the edge I will obviously be taking off the 'Clear Polyarmoured' coating and it will need to be recoated if I want to try and keep the bat looking the same.  So....therefore, what is in the 'Clear Polyarmoured'  solution?  Can you purchase it or make up it yourself by adding a mixture of certain chemicals together?

3.  Is what I'm asking an impossible task and only going to end up being a waste of time with the bat looking like a badly panelbeaten and painted car?

The damage on the face isn't that clear to see due to the fibre scuff sheet/taping but from what you can see there is some obvious damage due to being well used.   The stickers are in very good nick considering the age of the bat.
