So you would suggest buying a grade 2 bat ahead of a butterfly??

Yes Harry every time not only because its an higher grade it will be a nicer piece of willow.
I think the if you are a slogger advice was due to the butterfly willow being harder.

Looks do not equal performance.

I've had some dud higher grades. And ve had some grade 3 and butterflies that have out performed many a more expensive bat.

Anyway here a vid of essex Tim Phillips using his b3 butterfly straight out the pack!

That's correct but I'll take a grade two over butterfly anytime.

What I've gained thus far about butterfly bats...

Firstly get past the looks but you're already past that so that works in your favour and will save you money.

The willow normally has more moisture so it won't have anywhere near as big edges or volume compared to similar weight Asian bats. But edge size doesn't make a great bat and with it not being as dry it is less likely to crack so it should last longer.

The butterfly stain is harder. As I understand it is that it stems from that while the tree was growing an offshoot was not trimmed back in time causing a scar in the grains. It will fly off that area but some people cannot get on with the feel of that so you could look for one that has the stain outside the playing area. This will most probably increase the price though. My BB butterfly has its stain on the back. Luckily for me it was still priced as a normal butterfly bat.

Jakes/Vitas butterfly looks very nice btw and Red Ink did sort me out with very nice butterfly. BB might still be able to source a butterfly on request. H4L made one on special request for me and of course Aldred bats come very well regarded. Not so long back from the forum I sourced an Aldred butterfly for a team-mate. He wasn't too sure about the feel of the ball coming off the stain until he scored his first century with it recently. Plenty of choice then. Good luck with your quest.

What weight are you looking for btw?

Having scored as many runs with my butterfly bats as with my g1++ bats, I'd say the batsman is more important than the willow.

Thanks for the help. Haven't decided on the weight yet, but it will probably be around the 2'10-11 mark.

Based on my limited experience, butterfly willow tends to have a harder feel upon contact, especially when the stain is around the middle. In terms of performance, can't say I notice much difference except the ball tends to file off nicely from the stain, but I don't know if that's just my imagination. Some people don't like the feel as much, had a friend use mine and couldn't get on with it!

Butterfly need not mean heavy
This is 2lb 8oz
36mm edge
60mm spine
Next to no concaving

To be fair though, looking at the shape, it's kind of a peaky middle, not a 1271 or Powerbow though.

A high middled bat, the shape determined only by instructions given over the phone, and then crafted by someone who's never a seen a cricket bat in the flesh?

May be but the bloke said he was looking at Aldred butterflies. This is a Spectre, which next to a bench made out of a tree trunk I suppose looks thin. @GarrettJ wth wth, it's just a cricket bat.
