Soliataires....
« on: December 12, 2009, 09:58:30 AM »

Seems the bat review section doesn't get many views so review replicated here:

Right well as you chaps know there has been much scepticism over Roger's work even though i have had an absoloute belter last year some of you lads wouldn't believe it! Well anyway, glad to see a great review from custom Dan and see that his solitaire was excellent!

Obviously after having a gem of a bat from a bat maker you want the same again, so after my equipment arrived back from Australia after a jaunt playing in Melbourne the bat was straight off to Roger to have two replica's made. Roger was always at the end of the phone and was happy to reply to my text messages generally straight away, he was also happy to reply to me asking for updates on roughly when the bat would be ready.

After recieveing the bat it took roughly a 7-10 days for me to recieve the two new blades back! Excellent service and to say i was amazed was an understatement.

When Roger called to ask for payment he stated that he had got some lighter clefts and the profile on both was the same but had chunkier edges and more wood in the spine, i was happy with this so long as the weight gripped was at 2lb 13oz as i asked.

Well this is what you have been waiting for, the snaps:

BAT 1:

Weight: 2.13
Edge Height: 38 mm
Spine Height: 68 mm
Grains: 8 straight unblemished Grains

BAT 2:

Weight 2.13
Edge Height: 37mm
Spine Height: 66 mm
Grains: 8 straight unblemished Grains

Again i will reiterate that people who say a bat is super dooper ping tastic without playing against a hard ball are clowns, however you do get an impression from a tap with the mallet, and as with my last solitaire these are absoloute Gems, the profile is huge, the wood sounds fantastic off the mallet and i am itching to get in the indoor nets and give them a run out.

Just another point to clarify, many people say to me, do you only rate solitaire because they are cheaper than everybody else? No i don't i rate solitaire as they are cheap i rate them because they produce top quality bats! I don't have a money limit to buy bats and could happily buy a 300 quid L.e from GM or a 250 pound newbery but there is no need when Roger can make such fantastic bats, totally custom for a fraction of the price.

Fill your boots lads and don't get ripped off. 10/10 again Solitaire and Roger Weston.

Very good bats there Liam, well done. What was the original bat you modeled the solitaires on? Also has any one on the forum asked for a 2.8/2.9 Solitaire?

Ws based on my previous solitaire which was based on a newbery grizzly!

The previous solitaire is here:

What did impress me was that roger matched the weight and even number of grains but got more wood in the 2 new ones!

I hate to say this but for 2.13 i would want a bat with much bigger edges and middle - very nice shape and i'm sure the bat is good, but when i have picked up some 2.13's they have been monstrous whereas these look like they should weigh a lot less. Yes, good value for money and customer service from Roger and like you say they are they are top quality bats.

However, this is about the 6th bat with almost identical profiles i have seen on the forum - i'm not overly sure how well he is able to replicate the shape of another brand. The incurze replica he did the other day looked similar to this one if i'm honest.

I'm sorry but for me i am still yet to be convinced. Yes he produces some nice looking bats and i would genuinely like to try one out, but it just appears that he has one shape he makes and then scales it up/down depending on the weight.

Dom find me bats then with 37mm - 38mm edges with a near on 70mm spine, im dammed if i can find one at this weight! However, all that matters is customer satisfaction, and me, custom dan and watsnototty all like ours!

Yet you haven't had one!

But all comments gladly recieved.

Pictures are deceptive then as the spine doesnt look that big, it's always the case that you have to see these in the flesh though. It does look a good bat, there is no denying this :)
I have said i would like to try one and i will put my money where my mouth is once the council pay my wages, but for the mean time i will have to sit and watch others post their reviews/pics - i think the next person giving a bat to roger should give him a really challenging shape to see how well he replicates it.

Hmmm, all constructive comments- good to see its not descended in to a petty bicker (yet)!!!

It kind of echoes a previous comment I wrote; that all bats these days seem to have the same look to them, making it a mute point as to whether, i guess, it is truly custom as they all follow the same brief.

Still, nice looking stick there

SS - i think the shape and specs I gave him was pretty challenging . . .i see your point about them looking similar but the Grizzly and Incurza are pretty similar anyway. I guess you would have seen a bigger difference if i hadn't altered the incurza profile . . .if you see my review and previous posts with the rough blade you will notice i asked for thicker toe and edges . . .had i not done this i guess you would have seen a bigger difference in the bats.
