Brian Close
« on: September 14, 2015, 07:05:06 PM »

Sorry to read about the death of Brian Close my everlasting memory will be watching him at the age of 45 opening the batting against Daniels Roberts and Holding getting hit in the chest  time and time again in  the test match by  Holding and refusing to flinch no helmet no chest protector or arm guard no fending off bouncers offering catches  no limited on the number of bouncers either surely one of the bravest to play for England.

Quite an enigma, wasn't he - the youngest to play for England, at just 18, playing his last test at 45 - yet playing 'only' 22 Tests over 27 years.
His captaincy record is excellent. Ian Botham always spoke very highly of him as his (and Viv's) first captain at Somerset.

A good innings. R.I.P, Sir.

Yes he was at age 18 the youngest ever to play for England in the modern area  and the oldest returning to test cricket aged 45 after an abscence of nine years following a score  of eighty eighty  against the west indies quicks for Somerset.
