Toe guards
« on: October 05, 2015, 06:52:58 PM »

Used to buy these from sports direct when I was based in lovely Croydon, but the nearest SD to my new job in Beomley is rubbish and other than some sleaze get spikes, batting shorts and jock straps there isn't much.

Looked on eBay but they seem expensive or in random colours, all I want is the plain normal colour. Mullets did the slaz pack for 2.99 but it was then 3.95 shipping and hate paying more for shipping than the actual item!!!!

Any recommendations or ideas?

Get a tube of Shoe Goo from eBay.
Much better than a rubber toe guard, and much more economical.
Stops water ingress, provides protection, and easy to peel off.

Ronseal outdoor varnish does a good job keeping the moisture out, and is much easier to re-apply than a toe guard or shoe goo

I've used shoe goo before but didn't like how it looked and prefer the toe guard especially after spending small fortune in working out how to put them on

Varnish is fine for keeping out moisture, but doesn't provide much of a physical barrier between wood and wicket.
Put it on with your finger and smooth it over with a knife and a dab if water, and it can look neat.

Never had an issue of needing a barrier between the toe and the wicket really. Unless you're a heavy crease tapper it's something of a non-issue to my mind.

The varnish dries smooth so your bat runs in easier than the rubbery finish of shoe goo. Could make all the difference in a run out (yes, that was a joke...)

Not sure how close you are, but Bat and Ball in Sevenoaks tends to be pretty good. I haven't seen what stock they tend to have come October time though.
