Advice - Should I do a refurb ?
« on: October 23, 2015, 04:51:00 PM »

Hi,

I just got this bat from Ebay -

I am going to use it in the nets to start with and I can't make up my mind whether I just leave it as it is or go for a refurb.

If I went for the latter I would:

- Take off the scuff sheet and stickers using the hair dryer approach (I noticed the sheet goes over the stickers on the face so not sure if that will damage the stickers)
- sand down
- apply oil
- reapply stickers...not sure whats best for this

I've never attempted to do anything like this before and am a bit wary I will pull the scuff sheet and damage the bat.  I did ponder sending it to someone to do it for me but I suspect you will say that's cheating!  That would make sense if I have to spend almost the same money getting the raw materials to do the job though.

Any help much appreciated.

Thanks

Clean the marks off of the face first, use one of those washing up pads with the slightly abrasive pads on one side (ask your wife). You will be surprised how much of a difference this will make. If the scuff sheet is intact and the willow solid leave it. if the willow needs attention use a hair dryer to remove the scuff sheet and pull it off across the grain. This should not affect the stickers underneath. I would not touch the stickers if I was you as you will find it difficult/impossible to reattach satisfactorily.

Unless you want to oil your bat or change the scuff Rather than remove the face sheet give the sheet and stickers a clean using nail vanish remover on a cloth

Nice looking stick that. Whats the specs?
Personally, I'd remove the scuff sheet, get the residue off with white spirit on a rag and give the stickers a wipe white doing it to get the ball marks off.

Once the sheet is off, the residue gone and all the ball marks removed as best as you can, I'd use a very fine sandpaper on the face and around the stickers. Once sanded so the whole bat is nice and smooth again, apply a coat of wax/oil (whichever is your preference), leave for a week then apply a new scuff sheet.

Or alternatively you could always send it to someone else to do the refurb for you  ;)

Already looking better after a bit of rubbing :-)

From the ebay add "Blueroom Cricket Bat - handcrafted grade 1 English willow cricket bat made by local high quality bespoke bat maker Robert Pack - used for less than a season."  I asked and they said it weighed 2 10, but I've not checked that.

If you look closely at the top edge on the first photo you can just about see the scuff is coming off slightly on the side at points - say 25% of the length so it will stay there for a while I guess.  The face is fine so I wonder if that is enough to drive a decision to replace the scuff?  I've of a mind to leave it for now.

Cheers

Take into account I haven't played in many years but the mallet pings nicely off it to my mind.
