Helmet seems to have done its job though, always going to be a certain trade off between visibility and protection in this area and that looked a pretty perfect angle for it to get past the grill? If I'd have done that in my older style Masuri I wouldn't have been as lucky.

In other news, Georgie Pie Super Smash?

Georgie Pie... that's a blast from my family holiday in NZ back in the 1990's... they had fantastic pastry covered morsels back in the day..

I always thought they went belly up (no pun intended). Is it still a pie based fast food outlet?

They should bring Georgie Pie to the UK... it would make a killing (I would do my bit).

Why can't we have something like below with the pillar on either side to support the grill. Seems like a better design and don't think it will cause too much obstruction

The vertical shafts in this helmet is definitely a problem. Having said that is it not possible to adjust the spacing between the grill and the helmet shell ? I have seen many club cricketers who increase the space between the grill and the shell to gain better visibility (end up defeating the point of wearing a helmet !).

You can on the older style helmets, but this was one of the new masuri helmets in this case, which isn't supposed to allow a ball through and can't be adjusted

Each model has a min of 30 impacts to pass the testing on various locations on the grilles.

Also might be worth mentioning that the helmet may have taken some abuse in teh nets which weakened it. From memory my Masuri Test tells me to change lid if it takes some serious hits.

Oh .. i didn't know that. I recently upgraded my Albion helmet to Albion 98. It gives me an option to adjust the spacing. The helmet packaging came with a small card (with a picture of cricket ball on it). The guide suggest that i should adjust the grill such that the card cannot sneak through any part of the space between the grill and the helmet shell.

If the grill spacing is adjustable then it doesn't meet the new standards. Only those helmets with fixed grills so that it is impossible for the gap to be widened will conform

I got the Albion helmet from eBay. So its quite possible that its a 2014 model or something.

It won't make a difference, no Albion helmet compiles to the latest standard as yet

It's a bit generalised to say this, I don't think they've ever claimed it won't allow a ball through under any circumstances. It's designed to pass the pretty exhaustive safety test, which it does. But as Tom has touched upon, this test cannot cover every eventuality. What is clear is that helmets that pass the test are much safer than those that do not. If anyone owns an older style helmet the easiest way to visualise this point is to grip the grille and peak between fingers and thumb, and squeeze it together, lots of flex right? That flex will go the other way too, widening the gap
