Bit of a numpty full refurb question
« on: October 26, 2015, 09:00:54 AM »

I've been refurbing bats for a while but never done one in full where I've removed all of the stickers, sanded and then replaced the stickers. I'm planning on putting on some bat wax and just thought whether I should apply the stickers and do it or do the wax, let it dry/buff it off all over then apply the stickers?

if you apply the wax before the stickers you may need to give the bat a light sanding to ensure the surface is keyed enough to take the stickers as they wont go on too well to the waxy surface otherwise, If using some 1200 grit or finer this will give a smooth finish the stickers should still stick too.

Thanks Tom. I've sanded the bat all over using 80, 120, 240, 320 and finally 400. I guess the alternative is to put the stickers on and wax/buff around them?

Yeah thats the other option if you've got it back to white wood without the stickers on and are moving onto the finishing part now.

I use the apply the stickers and then the wax/oil method as the last thing you want is finding the stickers falling off as usually they arent easy to come by again!

Good point, found some genuine Salix stickers on eBay all the way from Australia which cost me £30, don't really want to waste them!

From the spelling in the threat title I knew what we were dealing with, everyone knows it's numpty, not numptie!

In answer to the actual question, i'd say apply the stickers then wax it. Nothing worse than a nice looking set of stickers refusing to stay on the bat  :(

Corrected the title :)

Thanks for the advice.

I would wax around the stickers as long as they are not clear. Salix stickers will look good.
