Giving a broken bat a brand new life
« on: January 21, 2016, 01:42:08 PM »

Hello all,

Just a quick one, whilst clearing out the upstairs storage at work, came a cross quite a few broken bats. Mostly split right through the face or other large cracks, however, there a few that have a few chunks missing out of the bottom of the bat, towards the toe and edge. One for example has lovely looking grains and looks like a belter, the chunk missing is down at the bottom, and goes about 3 inches up the bat, so rather than throw it away, has anyone ever just chopped the affected area off and used bats as a fielding bat or given to a junior at your club?

Is it just as simple as sawing off the bottom? Or is there a specific way or tool i should use?
Seems a shame to waste such a nice looking bat and may be able to restore a few others to some extent

Cheers

You can always try cutting the break away so its square and then cutting a matching piece out of another broken bat and gluing and doweling it onto the broken one to make a whole bat.

Yeh completely forgot about that, that would work as well because the area affected isnt really in the hitting area and only a small part of the front of the face is missing.

Just tapped an old ball up with the bat and it flies so could well be a worthwhile project

Done it often as we know the bottom 2 to 3 inches is normally dead doing it lowers the middle.
