Hi all, basically I've managed fine bowling in lightweight batting boots for years despite being 6'3" with a massive run-up, but broke my leg over the winter so my ankle isn't too strong at the moment. Played my first game of the season on Saturday and the Asics I've got aren't gonna cut it if I want to bowl as normal this season, didn't feel confident in them supporting my ankle one bit.

SO, obviously I need some shoes with much better support round the ankle, which probably means bowling boots. Been round the local sports shops today and noone has any that'll do. Looking at Asics Gel 210 or 220, the new Ben Stokes NB ones or maybe 4030s if the ankle support is good enough, or I spotted these new Puma boots which look quite nice but nowhere near me sells them - http://www.prodirectcricket.com/products/Puma-evoSpeed-14-Bowling-Boot-Mens-Shoes-White-Black-Safety-Yellow-117245.aspx

Planning a trip to Uzi sometime this week to try the others out as I think they have them all in stock, but part of me quite fancies the Pumas. Has anyone tried them or even better, own a pair? Experience/advice appreciated, thanks in advance chaps.

Try the old Adidas 22 yds they are very good and cheap as well

Should have mentioned I'm not considering Adidas, having had various pairs of spikes/trainers (inc the 22 yards) of theirs before in my opinion they aren't on the same planet as Asics for quality, and are just as expensive. May take a glance at the Vectors but unlikely.

Other than the strap across the tongue on the Pumas is there anything different heel/sole wise from standard puma shoes? I've got standard puma pulses and there a very good comfy shoe. Well built, and a lot thicker leather all round from my previous adidas 22yards

I've used them for all sports for last 4 years and I've not even rolled an ankle. They are not cheap, but cheaper than the boots mentioned above.

Being 6'2" and a fast bowler i currently own all 3 NB CK4040, Adidas Vectors & Asics Speed Menace. For best ankle support i would recommend Asics Speed Menace High.

The spikes and sole are definitely not the same, look to be more cushioned with a higher heel too but can't find any decent information. I've never had a pair of Puma spikes, good to know my impressions that they're decent quality are right, ta mate.

If you've ankle issues, I think you should look at high tops. They'll give you the most ankle support.

I have been using asics gel-Speed Menace Hi for over 3 years now. They have to be the best bowling shoes I ever invested in. The straps and the high tops help support the ankle alot. It is on the high end, but it could be 1 time investment like it has been for me.

Don't have issues with the ankle as much as a lack of confidence I think, with a loose fit around the ankle I don't feel able to run in and hit the crease hard. Have bowled at a decent lick in nets no problem, just need to make the step up to the full run on grass and build confidence and strength in the ankle up gradually. Happier wearing an ankle support until it's completely back to normal rather than hightops.

Went to Uzi today and tried plenty of boots on, went for a pair of Asics 210no which feel really good, the heel collar they have locks around your heel really nicely. They're also ridiculously comfortable and cushioned, even compared to other Asics spikes and trainers I have. Time to stick the Advance 6s on eBay!
