Amazing how little has changed! Did have a little chuckle at Amiss holding that bat up and talking about how much wood there was in it.

Cracking little film to watch over breakfast. Lots of willow in those 20mm edges could you imagine what Mr Fernley would have made with today's clefts. Set up looks like its in a house in a back street somewhere

brilliant stuff. For those not old enough, yes that's you Cam-meister.....yes in the 1970's car's were really like that and the bloke at the end of the film who looks like a Yeti, long hair was in so that was the 'style'
as for the batmaking....it's all in the pressing, it was back then and it still is now.The best press the bats the best that's how some grade 2's can play as well and the grade 1's/superwillow/special reserve/dogs do dah's grade...

That was a lovely retro backdrop, but the handmaking process with the press and spoke shave looks very similar to today's batmakers (some manufacturers CNC machines, notwithstanding).
This is a dangerous source of cricket films - I can see too much time being lost, trawling through some of the other films in that archive.
Great find, thank you,
David

How good is that film
I think the true skill from a batmaker is properly highlighted when they can produce bats in that weight range.
Cheers for posting

Did a search on the same website and I found this clip from 1939 - it's only the first couple of minutes and there doesn't appear to be any sound, but still quite interesting
