Sweeping bat
« on: August 10, 2016, 03:56:07 PM »

I have started sweeping to spinners recently, and it got me thinking what qualities in bat terms are required. For example people suggest that a high middle suits cutting and pulling. Would the same apply, would a low spine and big edges be preferable or the opposite?

As the aim is to middle the ball edge size wouldn't really matter!  ;)

I love playing the sweep (and reverse, but don't tell @Buzz I'm still practicing that one!) against spinners and medium pacers.
I think a lower middle works better, especially for the slog sweep - as the idea is free your arms to get as much leverage as possible. There's also no point having a high middle when you're fetching the ball from a couple of yards outside off stump!

As you've asked about shapes to match strokes, will you be using different bats to practice different shots? "This is my pull shot bat, this is my sweep shot bat" etc.

I have used high middle bats (Amplus) as well as duck-bill shaped bats and swept fine with both shapes. It is not the bat shape that connects the shot but your timing and technique. It doesn't hurt to have a well prepared/knocked bat close to the toe area.

Many thanks, not suggesting different bats rather if one is planning for to use the sweep as a scoring option amongst others which middle position would suit it and then depending on the other scoring shots being used the correct bat can be chosen. Regards edge size the question was based on the idea that some of the complaints of edge size are that it mean off centre shots go better and the structure tends to reduce the bat turning in the hands along with oval handles hence again better off centre connections, given that the sweep is most often played against spinners who will adjust pace and spin to change bounce I would have thought that off centre sweeps would be fairly common, or at least they are for me.
