« on: August 18, 2016, 10:08:16 AM »

Hi Matt,

I recently bought this bat ( 3 months ago) and i love this bat and thanks for helping me in getting one.

I have been scoring well with this over the last few weeks and in the last game I kinda miss hit full toss outside my off stumps and the ball hit at the very bottom on the bat.

Please advise what are my options! the toe guard came off !!

Hi - this is a shame, but can be fixed easily. fill the crack (assuming it doesn't go all the way through) with superglue, sand while wet so the sawdust helps fill the gap, let it dry, sand flat and then oil it, knock it a bit again, shoe goo, and you should be good to go.

Not much can be done to prevent this - unlucky, but not terminal.

If you purchased it from retailer or H4L directly 3 months ago then you will be covered, so send it back.
If you purchased it second hand then either repair it yourself (as it doesn't look too bad) or you could pay to have it repaired?

Either way, glad you are hitting runs with it

Why would he be covered under warranty? He's openly admitted that the damage was caused from toeing a delivery - hardly H4L's fault!

In my experience, any maker worth their salt covers new bats for a season. Obviously this would be general damage with the exception of misuse/mistreatment! Things like toe damage is not unusual (a decent in-swinging Yorker can often do the damage)
It is hardly the fault of the batmaker as willow is organic and is at the mercy of bad balls! But most batmakers I know will be happy to make basic repair within a sensible timeframe of selling a bat!

Who pays for postage generally in a case like this?

Neon cricket and Pete hosk are both right.

Cricket bat warranties vary, and are somewhat open to interpretation.

Most manufacturers I know of, and certainly all that we deal with, would happily have the bat back to repair the damage FOC. They would probably include a polite note reminding the customer that the bat is deigned to hit the ball out of the middle, the edges and toes are the weakest points and damage caused by player error (mistiming a shot) is not strictly covered. They would then go on to say that as a goodwill gesture they have repaired the damage FOC etc etc

The same response is usually what rebuffs attempts by parents with no knowledge of cricket to get a brand new replacement bat after minor edge or toe damage is sustained early in a bats life.

I don't know of any manufacturer that would pay for postage to fix damage like this.

In this specific case I would question the quality of the ball used. I've seen damage like this when jamming a Yorker. The interaction with the ball, bat and the ground leaves the bat with nowhere to go, causing it to crack. But this was caused off a full toss suggesting a very hard ball was struck. The colour of the cherries on the scuff sheet also suggests that a poor quality ball has possibly been used.

If you are based in the US, you are paying the postage.

manufacturers polite note might also say ''if by some remote chance you do hit one out of the middle stay calm and don't take a suicide run on the basis one came out of the screws'

Thanks all for sharing your thoughts!

I am very happy to pay for the postage and will be glad if Matt can help me with this.

I bought it directly through Hellfire site and spoke to them.

I ll give this a try!!

Also: note last game I scored 85 Runs( i generally play in the middle) its a Herefordshire division 2 B  League Match so the ball quality is good !!

Cheers
